Hi everyone!
I'd like to do some dummy cakes for practicing and wanted to get your input as to the best way to do this.
I hear styrofoam being used - correct?
Wrapped in plastic I think?
I need to practice covering in fondant, gumpaste flowers and possibly piping.
Please share what you use - thank you!!
I use styrofoam, not wrapped in plastic, just plain. I either coat it with a little shortening or I spritz it lightly with water so the fondant will stick. From there on, it's just like decorating a regular cake. Have fun with it and take lots of pictures for your portfolio!
Actually, if you don't have a lot of dummies on hand, you can do all this right on cake pans turned upside down. You still get the dimensions and the curvature without the expense of dummies. After all, either way you'll just be washing the fondant, icing, etc. off so you can practice again!
