In case there are people who haven't seen this yet.

I guess that could work if the cake is dry and nasty but if its yummy, everybody will want a piece! And then what happens when there's nothing left for half of the guests? Also, people seem to want to try the cake if its really pretty, as well...

You know, I happen to love going to weddings because I love the cake. Plus, when I got married, I was glad we had extra cake left over so we could take some on our honeymoon. The piece from the wedding was the one bite and I never got another piece so I was glad to enjoy some later. You would think they'd tell them to save money on the guest favors instead. I've yet to get a guest favor that I like.

Even if you are full, most people want to taste the cake. I can see it now, the bride and groom cut the cake with everyone watching, the cake is wisked away by the staff to the back, the servers emerge from the back and serve only half of the guests cake. Everyone else is "invited" to have a slice of key lime pie or a lemon bar from the dessert buffet. One word comes to mind: tacky!

i feel like this is backwards. order half the cake but offer a dessert bar? how but we cut the dessert bar and just have cake? who writes these things?

If the couple is on a really tight budget then I can understand ordering a little bit less cake because it's common for some of the guests to be gone by the time the cake is cut; however I wouldnt suggest cutting cake count by half !!! Not to mention, do they know how small a cake for 75 people is ? In the day of TV cake shows where cake decorators create masterpieces that would probably feed 600 people I have found brides dissapointed to see the size of a cake that feeds 100 people. I mean, I can feed 75 people with a 14 inch 2 layer cake.....not much of a showpiece for someones once in a life time wedding reception ! Whoever wrote that article didnt give it a lot of thought.

I blame the Knot, they are really stupid to keep trying to undercut wedding cakes - I never see them undervalue any other wedding services, I don't know what the fixation is on making everyone believe the wedding cake is unnecessary or overpriced. But boy, they sure want our advertisement dollars... one of these days one of the big cake shops are not gonna want to play anymore.

This is not good advice to give bride and grooms! For one thing what if everyone does want a piece of cake! Oops sorry only this half of the room gets cake! Most venues will end up cutting these tiny tiny pieces because they will have a guest count and a cake to only feed half! I cant see a wedding venue liking this suggestion because their staff will be the ones to tell people "sorry there's no more cake"

I just read the story and this is one of the comments posted:
"The bride will NOT announce to the guests that SHE ordered only half the servings necessary. The shortages will be blamed on the BAKER!"

well I guess they dont' like alternate articles on how to really save money and the suggestion that a reporter does actual research would have found out this same info .... looks like my post didnt' make it.

"Attention guests we are now serving the last piece of decadent wedding cake could you please report to the dance floor and wrestle to see who gets it"-LOL.....Crazy articles...Wedding cakes (in this economy) are the ONLY cakes you should not cut corners on. Thats what people remember, not the center piece or the lighting, geeez!!

I had a bride who ordered cake for half of the guest in order to save money and because they were having a large cookie table. My sister was at the wedding and told me she had to ask for a piece of cake from the staff. The staff wasnt passing it out because there wasnt enough for everyone. Thats why you shouldnt invite 600 peole to your wedding! Dont you think cutting the guest list is a better $ saver?!?! Geez!

What I love is if you are on that tight of a budget maybe you should consider going to the courthouse instead of half a$$ing the whole shebang.

Honestly, the only way to stop these people from putting out this rubbish (or at least reduce it) is for cake decorators to stop supporting them with our (hard earned) advertising dollars. Money talks and we know what walks; gotta hit 'em in the pocketbook!

How many cakers spend oodles of money on the Knot and similar places who then turn around and tell brides that our services are not worth their money or that what we provide is not that important. It's really messed up and it won't get any better until we as a community stand up for ourselves in a way that matters.

Of course, we also have to de-bunk the brides on this garbage which costs us more time and money.

I've said it before....at this stage of the game, one of the main reasons I go to weddings is TO EAT WEDDING CAKE. And, of course, to offer good wishes to the happy couple.

I DO NOT need another picture frame, tiny basket of something, silver doodad, or useless trinket, which automatically goes to the youngest child in our extended family.

Save money on favors--buy a great cake! And buy enough for everyone!

I have said for years and years that the bridal magazine are just big catalogs for the dress makers. Anytime I flip thru a bridal magazine, I feel lucky if I see even ONE wedding cake photo in there. Because of the big dollars being spent by the dress makers, do you EVER see an article about how to get by with a cheap dress? Ever?

Cakes are a somewhat regional product. I've advertised in local wedding magzs but would consider it a waste of money to advertise in a national magz. The odds of me selling a cake to someone in San Francisco are smaller than slim to none.

Dresses, however, can be shipped anywhere so nat'l advertising works for them.

Money talks .... or in this case, money causes the bridal industry to "keep quiet" about doing anything cheap with those who spend the big money on advertising.

Wow, just when you think you've heard it all...

We have yet to pay for advertising with The Knot, and now I'm glad we haven't!

Most wedding goers bring you a nice gift and well wishes. Don't you think they should have a nice meal with some yummy cake for dessert?
