If it's hot and humid and there may be a possibility of the cake sweating, DO NOT use brown sugar. It will melt (become syruppy) and dissolve with the condensation. Even if the cake is prepped in a cool kitchen, then taken outside in the heat it may sweat. i would used crushed vanilla wafers or graham crackers, or possibly a mixture of both so you have different colors and textures.

I use crushed vanilla wafers also, and sometime I throw a bit of cocoa in with them for a darker color

Yep--crushed 'Nilla wafers and I like to add some crush cinnamon graham crackers. Much better texture & taste than straight brown sugar.

I colors some B/C tan and sprinke the mixture on it.

will the crackers or cookies become mushy from the frosting?
Do I need to wait until the last minute to add the sand?
thanks

I've done it the night before and left the cake at room temp. No mushiness. Now, if you put it in the fridge, they might get funny.

I also add some yellow or gold sanding sugar to the cookie crumbs for sand-like sparkle.
