So had a mom and daughter come in back in April asking about a baby showers cake, she was very sepcific she wanted a four tier cake all in fondant, gave me all the details she wanted and we discussed flavors, etc. I gave her the price for everything with delivery which came to she replied, i knew it'd be expensive but not That much, i told her i would be glad to rework the cake so she could have the design elements in a smaller disply since they didnt need that large of a cake to feed everyone, she said no, they wanted a cake that big. Anyways, i told her we would require a 50% deposit to book the date and then balance to be paid no later than 10 days before delivery ( which of course is my standard policy) She said she would come by the following day to pay the deposit she would need to get the money form her husband. Okay, well a week or so passes and have not heard from her so i call and let her know that i will be booking the date because she did not pay a deposit, she said oh i want it the cake i am coming today to pay the entire amount. I seriously doubted she would but said okay but the date will be booked tomorrow afternoon if i have not recieved payment.
No show, so i natuarlly booked the date with customers who paid as expected. So this morning i get a very irrate phone call from mom, about how i just ruined her daughters baby shower because i did not deliver the cake on sunday like they had asked. I gently reminded her that she never paid and so i considered her order null. to which her reply was "i was going to write a check when you delivered it".
I mean REALLy i told you, pay or i give the date away, in which world does that translate, oh i will make a cake dleiver and let you pay me witha check on delivery, um no, rarely do i deliver without full payment, only for frinds or very good clients with a phone order, then they pay with cash on deliver if not paid with credit card over phone before hand.
Okay sorry i know long, but had to vent it out.
I had when people do that. i had a similar issue except I lost a date because i was making a cake for a friend and she said she wanted this cake and gave me te 25% deposit i ask for and she ended up never contacting me and ignoring me. I now am skeptical of even friends... sorry you had such a horrible experience. You didnt ruin anything she ruined the shower by being irresponsible.
Just another example of "It's YOUR fault that I screwed up." I think it's an epidemic.
Sorry that happened to you but in the end it sounds like a good thing that you didn't make the cake for her. She sounds like a client who will never be happy, if its not one thing its another.
if checks dont have time to clear before a product is picked up/delivered then i require payment in cash or credit card. A friend that helps me at the shop told me she would probablly call saturday morning wanting me to do the cake for sunday delivery ( which i only do sunday pick up/deliveries for large cakes occassionally) when i let my friend know she called today to chew me, she couldnt quit laughing, she said her sister was at the shower and they had a plain cake from walmart and someone asked about the big cake daugter had been bragging about, and they tried to pawn it off as i just didnt show up.
What i gather daughter is pretty upset since she is not getting married so she thought she should have a big baby shower cake to replace the abscense of a big wedding.
I totally agree with the way you handled the situation, sorry you had to have that experience.
Don't let the Momzilla get to you. She is trying to transfer all of her responsibilities onto you... She didnt pre-pay the deposit, she didn't call back when she was supposed to, she didn't make the 10 day prior payment in full, she didn't call the day before to say "OMG, I forgot I was supposed to do this and that... therefore Momzilla got just what she put into this Baby-Bridal cake... hot air.
Some folks are just bluff and fluff. If she had a WalCake there at the shower then she wasn't expecting you to show up with yours. She probably just called you to cover up the fact that she never intended to pay for a good cake with her daughter and her friends. Just pour yourself a big glass of wine or soda and drink to her memory and forget she ever existed!!!!
PS to my prior post...
No don't forget she never existed, cause you need to add her to your DO NOT CALL ME list!!!
Happy Caking!!!!
It just never ends huh? When they start out expecting it for nothing you can pretty much guarantee it's going to end up like this.
My response to this ignorant woman....
"Lack of planning on your part doesn't constitute an emergency on mine!!"
You didn't ruin anything..she was trying to get a cake for free and write you a bum check!!
Just another example of "It's YOUR fault that I screwed up." I think it's an epidemic.
This is off topic but relevent to the above statement: At our hotel we have free popcorn from 3pm to 10pm. Some lady got into the storage area under the popcorn machine, grabbed the spray can of cleaner we use on the machine, sprayed it on her popcorn, then had the nerve to yell at one of my co-workers because it wasn't spray butter like she thought it was !
SHE'S the idiot who sprays stuff on her food without reading the label and somehow turns that into being OUR fault!
People can be idiots at times!
to which her reply was "i was going to write a check when you delivered it".
To which you should have replied "and I was going to bake you a cake when you delivered me some money..."
I've had similar things happen and I swear that people just want something for free. I refuse to give in. You know who gets free stuff in my shop....my GOOD customers. I just have a dad free cupcakes today because he comes in with his two boys at least 4 times a week. So today I said "on the house". He asked why and I said "because you are nice and nice people deserve a break". The jerks that come in and act like your momzilla...just keep on going...we don't need them!
I have been known to tell a customer or two:
Your lack of planning is not my emergency. Your lack of following the rules is not my problem either.
to which her reply was "i was going to write a check when you delivered it".
To which you should have replied "and I was going to bake you a cake when you delivered me some money..."
I LOVE IT

As I was reading the 1st post, that's exactly what I thought would happen!
I figured that mama had no intention of paying for an expensive cake and so rather than fess up to being cheap, she'd try to make it out as your incompetence!!!!
We live in an era of "if you can think of a way to make it someone else's fault--go for it!" Makes me sick, too.
I'd be calling that beotch and telling her that if she continues to malign my business practices, I'll be suing her for defamation and loss of revenue due to slander.
Heck, I'd take out an ad in the local paper/pennysaver stating that I was NEVER paid to make a cake for the XXX baby shower and that despite current rumors, I had no REASON to show up with a cake because I hadn't been hired to do so!!!!!!!!
Kidding? NOT!

that's awesome!! What a wonderful way to appreciate the customer-I love it!

It's always nice to do something special for someone because they deserve it and not because they expect it or demand it.

LMAO .... u hit the nail on the head ....there is nothing more to be said ...!!!!!1
I made a three tier cake with six small cakes last weekend. I told the lady that I would email her a picture on Friday of three choices of ribbon as she wanted gold ribbon on the cake so she could pick which one she wanted. I heard nothing. I also told her that she would need to pay the remainder of the balance on Friday the day before the event nothing. So I sent her and email stating that I informed her that she needed to pay for the cake by Friday and pick the ribbon. If I didn't hear from her by 1:00pm on Saturday that she would need to make arrangements to pick up the cakes that I would no longer be able to deliver them and she also had to send the remaining payment on pickup. She called me at 8:30am the next morning giving me excuses on how crazy everything has been. I'm sorry but honestly I don't care. I told her that I needed one months notice to make gumpaste roses for her cakes she gave me three weeks. I also asked her to send me a picture of the flowers on her daughters dress as she wanted me to match them so she sends me a picture of a flower she found online. I had to wing it on the color since I didn't have an actual picture of her dress. She waited so long to decide on the cake I received my supply shipment the day before I had to assemble the cakes. I think these people think we wave our magic wand and poof there is a cake. Don't feel bad it's their fault not yours they did it to themselves.
