I was just about to say that she is probably other baker. She most likely feels threaten by you and the possibility of you taking costumers from her. There for she was probably wondering how much you would charge, so she could charge less.
I really don't think she is another baker, she sends the same email to multiple bakers, and she is located about 2 1/2 hours from me, so I am not her competition. I don't know what her deal is, but when I googled her she seems to be running some scam with an apartment because she has multiple classified ads under different names with the same phone number.
This is what I would do. Gather up all the information given to you by this forum, print it out, (everything). Then go to your local newspaper or television and ask them to investigate it. I know that my television station is always willing to investigate scams and put it on the news to warn people. At least that is what a reporter is suppose to do, investigate a good story.
I just posted this on the other thread about this scam....
my guess is that the scammer is just using this woman's name. Why would Elizabeth the baker lie about needing a cake but use her own name?
Everybody say it with me, all together now...1 - 2 - 3 SCAM
This is a scam plain and simple and should be reported to the authorities.
I just got this email today and immediately knew it was some sort of scam or joke. Good thing i googled her email address and found this.

Wow, they sure came up with some exotic flavors!
And I bet their budget is $200 hahahaha
As I said before, I know that this woman is a con-artist, I just don't understand what she gets out of it though. No one in their right mind would ever make a cake of this magnitude with out having a deposit that cleared weeks ahead of time and then a final payment that also cleared weeks ahead of time. So what could she possibly be hoping to gain by doing this?
This is 100% SCAM! Aside from googling her name and number, you can also do a search of her email headers. I will guarantee she is not from wherever she says she is. These scams occur all the time, although this is the first time I have heard of it happening to bakeries! This is a typical 419 scam..they run rampant on sites like ebay and craigslist. They are sometimes the "buyer" and often the "seller". They will do things like sell puppies that dont exist, and rent vaccant appartments that dont even belong to them. When you have some time and need a laugh, check out the site 419eater. Its dedicated to people whoe "bait" scammers like this. There is also a site dedicated to warning people of scams and is also helpful by listing some of the newer scams so people know what to look for that would indicate a scam. That site is scamwarners.
Anyhow, I am so glad you heeded everyone's warnings! Scam Scam Scam!! Walk away!!
Elizabeth Kerr contacted me again about a ridiculous order and I replied and sent her this link to let her know we were on to her scam and this was her reply.
"Well I don't own a bakery, and I am not scamming anyone. The reason I didn't go to these people because, the never call me they couldn't do it I am definatly not a scammer.I just paided off a order for my mom's cake and she told me to contact someone about my brother's cake because, the other lady the I order the cake from is going on vacation.I am usually just looking for a price quote befor I place an order for anything."
She is doing something strange.
I agree with Jason. This is one for the DA. Soon enough you will get a legit order for a $1000 cake.
This is the email I recived from her asking for a $50 deposit she didn't tell me she had a paypal account but, just as well I found someone who mad the design just perfect and it tasted good to.this is the email:

Hi Elizabeth!
Those flavors sound divine. First, I do have that date open. I can definitely create this vision, and would be able to deliver the cake to the location of the party, within your budget. It is also far enough in advance that I can perfect the recipes for the flavors your requested. Are you local, or are located in Middletown? What is the occasion for the cake? I ask for a non-refundable $50 deposit to hold the date for the cake, and then would need payment in full 2 weeks prior to the event. I would be happy to discuss the details over the phone if you would like me to call you. Thank you for contacting me, I hope I can make your vision a reality.
Sincerely,
Amy Cozze

Ok, great. I got your message last night and I will be calling you later today to go over some of the details.
Thanks!
She's the one who called me names. I am not a baker.I had the deposit in my hands but, she's the one who insulted me.I will just stick with the people that know me then like some people who accuse me of being a scammer I will stick with people I trust. this my cake made and designed by a real baker with the flavors i requested.

Nice cake! Which bakery made it, and how much did you pay for it?
BTW I hear Liza's Home Bakery in Poughkeepsie makes pretty good cakes, they don't seem to have a web site but you may want to contact the owner if you need a cake in the future.

Normally I would say welcome to CakeCentral but it looks like you joined almost two years ago.
OK...I'm so confused! But even with all the stuff about scams and such may I ask the OP...with all the exotic ingredients and expense of this cake, why would you only ask a paltry $50 to reserve the date! For that kind of cake (providing it were legit) I'd ask for half up front to reserve and then the rest a month before the event. I guarantee you if you'd asked for $500 in deposit money things would have cleared up rather quickly.
This is a strange thread...but interesting! (Nice post Jason!) hee hee hee.
I haven't read through all the replies but this is a definite scam. She says she'll send you a check for $200 but it comes through at $2,000. Then she'll urge you to deposit the money and send her the balance. Your good check is on its way to her while hers bounces. Definite scam. Just hang up next time.
wow I have no idea what's going on now.
I know someone's already mentioned it but Paypal would be a terrible way to go! Even if you've had good experience with them so far, problems are inevitable when you consider what a horrible reputation paypal has now. Everyone thinks "oh it will never happen to me". Next thing you know, your customer files a non-delivery and paypal refunds the money. Easiest way to scam someone is to pay them with paypal and reverse charges.
I am so lost.... So it wasn't a scam, or was it? Was the cake made by the CCer? What is going on?
The customer who contacted the OP also contacted another baker in the area with a similar order, that baker referred her to this thread, and the customer responded.
The customer has been a member of CC for almost two years but this is her first post, and the customer (or someone with the same name who lives in the same city) owns a bakery.
It sounds fishy but there is a chance that this was all just a difficult-to-work-with customer instead of a scam.
i would've bet it was a scam too...compared to some of the other emails us bakers have seen it definitely matched up. so, if the person ordering this knew all this information that we knew she might see it the same way...but i can see now she may have just been well informed!
OH! who knows! people can type anything they want on the internet!!! LOL
Considering this was Liza's ONLY post, she's been a member since 3/17/10 and she has NO photos, I would tend to think that not only is it a scam, but she's part of it. JMO
I still say it's a scam. They probably just didn't want to be labeled as a scammer so they could keep running it- gotta cover those tracks! That picture was either taken with a really bad camera phone, or it's a really old picture. Just my thoughts. In those emails was a date ever given for when the cake was needed? I read through it, but maybe I missed that.

That was my first thought when I saw the post. I also noticed that there are no pictures on that person's profile. My opinion is that she is member so she can keep track of the forums & such.
