Either way it doesn't really matter. If you employ sound business practices, you're not going to be taken in by a scammer. It's when our "want to" gets in the way of our "should" that we get ourselves into trouble.

What a timely thread - a great replacement for those soaps that have been cancelled. "Cakes of Our Lives". What will happen next? Was this all a tragically misunderstood customer, a scam revealed, a scammer scorned? And who made that cake? Was it delicious? Box mix or scratch?(not to mention when was it made)... And what ever happened to the OP? All we need now is amnesia and a fake pregnancy and we got ourselves a daytime Emmy contender!

More than likely a scam. It sounds like the same one that circulated last year. OR it could be another baker or friend of a baker checking out your prices and products you offer. But be careful, there are all kinds of freak weirdos out there.

I believe whomever the Liza is on cake central only joined to FISH for bakers to setup her scam. Or it was possible for the scammer to HACK Liza's unused account.

BTW , Cakes of our lives -hysterical!

I noticed in the emails from the purported customer there is a lot of bad grammar, or at least weird grammar. That is usually a hallmark of a scammer. Usually b/c they are run by people for whom English is not their first language (e.g., the Nigerian scams). Almost without exception, there is strange syntax, tenses, word usage, etc. Misspellings also, but that alone wont necessarily raise flags. I am an excellent speller, but atrocious typist.

I still say this is a scam. Maybe someone fishing for prices. But with the money order, it was either going to be that scam to get you to refund that money, or the shipping. In the money order scam, the MO is fake but your bank doesn't figure this out for about 2 weeks. By that time, they are long gone with the cash refund from you. If it was the shipping scheme, I think at some point delivery would have been changed to using a company, not in person.

I definitely still think this is a scam. And the more the word gets out about ALL scams, the better.

A

Original message sent by jason_kraft

The customer who contacted the OP also contacted another baker in the area with a similar order, that baker referred her to this thread, and the customer responded.

Yes, I maybe I am difficult. But, I was just looking for a cake I am not looking for wedding cakes birthday cakes for family and friends.

The customer has been a member of CC for almost two years but this is her first post, and the customer (or someone with the same name who lives in the same city) owns a bakery.

It sounds fishy but there is a chance that this was all just a difficult-to-work-with customer instead of a scam.

This is the copy of her response last night to me after saying I could not accept her order, and asking why.  I sent her a copy of the original thread dated 2011:

I don`t own a bakery! I was just looking for a cake for my niece. So know you got my address and figured you can`t do it and this is just an excuse to get out of it just like Ann cozze and her other friends.  I was going to send the money out to complete the order thanks for wasting my ink and my printer paper.

Anyone know Anne Cozze?  There is a bakery called Liza's Home Bakery listed at the address the woman gave me for delivery, which by the way is 3 1/2 hours away.

I want to know what the end game was.  No one has posted what the follow through was.  This woman booked for end of September, plenty of time to get the money, cash it and make sure it was legit.  I don't blieve that it is a fishing bakery as I'm in another state.

Amy Cozze is the OP of this thread.  Coincidence?  And hello all, I have been lurking for years, just never had a reason to write.  :)

What's with all these random weird old threads being resurrected and random weird things being posted on the end of them.  The last few threads I've checked out are doing this????

Because the thread showed up in Google when I goggled the persons name.  Is there a problem with that?  A scam is a scam no matter how old it is, and the fact that it is still happening 3 years later should bother you more than the me asking a question on an old thread.

Amy Cozze left and then came back under a different name, but I haven't seen her post in a while.  You can find her on Facebook-she's in PA as well so you may reach out to her through FB and ask what happened.

No didn't have a problem just thought it was odd that three different threads I looked at last night were very old, that's all.

She's at it again!

Elizabeth Kerr contacted me tonight asking for an enormous cake for her mother's birthday.  This time she attached a sketch of a six tier cake with intricate decorating work, including painting on the cake.  Here is the message I received:

Could you make this?

Each layer a different painting each banded in gilded gold with clusters of white roses, blue irises and green orchids.  Each cake will be formed and covered with a thick layer of marzipan to create the base for the decoration will will be "painted" on buttercream and royal icing so that it will have that lovely "rough" effect of an actual Van Gogh painting The top of the cake will be blue irises growing out of the blue iris painting to create a beautiful plume of irises on top in sugar paste flowers.

The cakes will have decoration on all sides, but the main design will be on the front of the cake, for example, the back side of the 4th tier will have the walkways leading to the church with the woman walking along them and the bottom tier will have the village from starry night, etc

The Starry Night
Irises and roses
Starry night over the Rhone
Sunset at monmajour
Wheatfield with crows
The Church at Auvers

Please give me a call at 845-672-0691.

Due to the history with this woman (now going on four years I think? as I research complaints about her on the internet) if you receive an inquiry, simply politely decline her order and get rid of her fast. Don't call her - waste of time - and do not enter into ANY monetary exchanges with her.

As small business owners and bakers, we don't have time to waste going back and forth and back and forth with this woman who is obviously mentally ill or a not so bright scammer.

You have to shake your head and wonder though who in the world would go through all this trouble though... I mean, look at that sketch!!!  LOL!
