Is there a formula or trick or way of measuring a cake so when you put stripes or diamonds, squares, etc around the cake they match up perfectly and don't overlap or leave a gap?

Thx

you can make a template of your cake sides with parchment paper. cut out a rectangle that would be the exact dimensions of your cake sides ... from there, it's math icon_sad.gif not my strong suit, but at least you can practice on the paper before touching the cake!

You need to know how long the cake is around - the circumference.

To get this measurement:

1.Measure how far accross the cake is with finished decoration. It might be 8 1/2 inches, 12 3/4 inches or whatever.

2. Multiply that measuremnt by 3.14. That's the answer.

OR:

Take a piece of string. Wrap it around. Measure it.

Yor final pattern should fit in this length.

I use a measuring tape from the fabric department and wrap it around my cakes. It is soft and bendable and won't mark fondant (not sure about buttercream, never tried it). Once I determine how many inches I have, I do the math then use the tape measurement to mark my spacing (either using a foodsafe pen since it will be covered by my stripes, etc. or marking the fondant with my exacto knife).

For a buttercream cake, to find the measurement of the circumference, you might have to use matthewkyrankelly's method above of measuring the top across from one side to another, and then multiplying that measurement by 3.14.
