Hello all!

I looking to venture into making decorated cookies. Not sure if I will like it however they seem to be getting really popular as favours so I thought I'd give it a shot.

Does anyone have a really good sugar cookie recipe that they swear by? I am looking for one that doesn't require a lot of prep, can be made in small or large batches, keeps their shape when cooked and, of course, tastes great! I'm not asking for too much here, eh? icon_wink.gif

Thanks!

There is a great recipe at kitchengifts.com. It is called "never fail cookie recipe" I use it all the time and it works great. There is also a lot of information on making cookie at that site.

The kitchen gifts site has a lot of good info. I checked their recipe against the 2 I already have and there is very little variation. The only difference I could find in sugar cookie recipes is if you want crisp or chewy. The kitchen gifts makes nice chewy cookies.

I just purchased a ton of cookie cutters from foosecookiecutters.com Try them. I am nuts about cookies, have been most of my life. I own about 300 different cutters.

Foose has great prices on their cutters. I also purchased a copper cookie cutter making kit from them. GREAT investment. I'm ordering more copper to make more. Copper cookie cutters run about $9 each, and I made mine for like $2 each.

I just started decorating my cookies with MMF. People love them Keep asking how I make them so pretty. I've been making cookies as gifts for about 12 years and now they are becoming popular. My friends are encouraging me to sell boquets on the side. I'm thinking about it, but I work full time and have a four year old that keeps me super busy.

Hi tripletmom, the recipe I use for sugar cookies is from Toba Garett (sp?). It is really delicious. The only mistake I did the first time I made them was I used salted butter (I had bought the wrong kind and realized it after I added it to the mix) instead of unsalted and I found them too salty for my taste; otherwise a great cookie. If you can't find the recipe, PM me or leave me your e-mail address and I'll send it to you.

PS. After several attempts at different icings, I settled for royal icing (also from Toba), and that is what I use on the cookies.

Regards, Naty

I've recently started doing decorated cookies myself. You are definitely right, they are becoming VERY popular these days. Right now I'm shopping around, trying to increase my cookie cutter collection without having to pay all those sometimes expensive shipping costs from ordering online. It just seems SO hard to pay $6.00 shipping when I'm only ordering $5-10 worth of cookie cutters. Anyway, I've been using a recipe I found on MarthaStewart.com. They have a great flavor. The first time I made them I was unfortunately out of butter & used margarine because I was just dying to try the recipe. The flavor was good even with the margarine.

If you use this recipe watch them very closely & the minute the edges start to brown take them out of the oven if you want them to remain soft & chewy. They seem to taste better each time I make them, altho this past time I will admit I had quite a bit of trouble cutting the dough into the shapes, as it seemed very soft even after I chilled it for several hours. Maybe I didn't have quite enough flour or something. Well enough of my rambling..good luck!!

Hi, welcome on board. This is really a wonderful website. I have learned so much from everyone......you will love it also.

Just curious, what icing do you use on your cookies?

Thanks,
Naty

Hi and welcome as well. This is a great place to be.

I have heard of MMF on cookies. This is like a fondant right? Are they hard to do on very time consuming? I haven't tried it yet b/c it seems to take too much time. How do you do them? Do you have any pictures to share?

Thanks,
Naty

Hi Naty & thanx!! This definitely does seem like a great board. I love it already.

I use royal icing to decorate my cookies with. It has proven a little tricky to teach myself how to use the royal icing to actually coat the top of the cookies smooth & have it come out looking like something I'm happy with. I've used it on my cakes, but piping it into flowers is a bit different. I've learned from my struggles tho, so if you need any tips or the recipe just let me know.

Too bad I didn't find this place sooner, I'm sure I could have gotten a few tips on icing consistance & things like that..lol well good luck!!
