Has anyone made seashells for a cake. Should I make them with white chocolate and brush with color dust or use fondant.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

If you buy a chocolate mold you can use like cream colored fondant or white chocolate to make the mold of the shells, then brush with other colored dusts.

I made loads of shells on my last cake(dolphin one) and used fondant in a chocolate mould.

Put a bit of icing sugar in the mould so they wouldnt stick and then dusted with powders.

I made some shells for some beach themed cupcakes (in my photos), and I used the plastic candy molds you can get at Michaels for pretty cheap. I smeared a VERY SMALL amount of gel colors in the molds (pale pink, ivory, copper), and then poured in melted white candy melts. They set up in the fridge and popped right out. Super easy and everyone loved them!

I used candy melts and a wilton chocolate
Mold for my last cake and dusted with a little luster dust. To get a little but Of a marbled effect you can swirl a little orange or pink candy melt in white right before you pour. Be careful with gel color. Candy melts are oil based and they react to the gel and chalk up. You can find oil based color by the candy melts if you need other color choices. If I have time I will sometimes make mine out mmf if I want softer elements. Good luck icon_smile.gif

I got a tip from a chocolate maker..If you dust the chocolate mold with lustre dust..It will pop out with the dust already on it.

I used white chocolate in silicone molds, then dusted with different colored luster dusts for seashells on cupcakes in my photos. I used gumpaste in silicone molds for the big starfish on the top cake, and brushed them with luster dust as well.

They all work! (Chocolate, fondant, gumpaste...) I chose chocolate for cupcake toppers because I expected them to be eaten. The drawback to chocolate is how long it takes to make a big quantity if you don't have a lot of molds; you have to wait for the chocolate to set up. If you use fondant, you can crank them out as fast as you can get them out of the molds. But they won't taste as good.

Just depends on what you're looking for.
