I took the old courses a couple of years ago. I am just a hobbyist and like to play. I occasionally make cakes for family and friends and maybe for bake sales or church functions and such. I spent a considerable amount of money for all the "stuff" to make cookies, gumpaste flowers, fondant, cuppie ... you name it I have it lol. I just signed up for the new classes as I am retired and just a bit bored right now(I am taking care of my elderly mother and my dh says he will fill in for me during class time...I'd let her tag along but she is legally blind and quite deaf...not much fun for her I would think).

When I signed up for course one, they told me at Hobby Lobby that I needed to buy the new kit. I have just about everything I saw listed on the back of the kit box except for the new flower nail "stickies" and the cupcake nail. Are these necessary? I am thinking even if I buy the kit with a 40% off coupon, I have everything already and just am just making Wilton some more profit.

I promised dh that I wouldn't spend any more money on supplies since I have just about everything I could ever use. Again, I am not a pro, but I love to decorate cakes and cookies as gifts and such.

I guess I will be the only one who won't have the new kit. Am I overthinking this and worrying too much? I tend to do that sometimes!

Call the teacher and ask.

You can actually buy the nail stickers seperately. Don't waste your money buying the kit if you already have the supplies, but make sure you get a book. Have fun!

I am a WMI and you do NOT have to purchase the new kit. You can use what you have and if you want to purchase the things you don't have that are in the kit go ahead and do that. I have lots of students that have done that. Oh, and you do not need the cupcake nail, but the stickers would be handy.

Honestly, unless you are having problems with some of the basics like shells, I wouldn't re-take the first course. But if you do, don't worry about the cupcake nail because most of my students prefer to not use it. Course 2 has always been my favorite but I really like working with royal icing; I think it is the most challenging and many students would benefit from taking it a second time-mostly because they don't have enough time to sufficiently practice the piping.

If you have been decorating I definitely would not take the course 1 again. It is very basic. stars. curving lines, shells and ribbon roses. In fact, the first class you put stars on cookies. I would definitely sign up for the second course, royal icing. You learn the lily using the 366 tip. You could even take the fondant class but, no more stacking cakes in it. I think you will like the new curriculum, some different ideas.

Thanks for the input. I didn't think I'd need the cupcake nail, I have done cuppies without one.

I prolly should have signed up for the second class but figured I would enjoy starting from the beginning. Practice is something I need! Plus, it is a great way to get out of the house and meet new folks.
