Hi all

I am a newbie both to this forum and to cake decorating. I have always been a good baker and always bake from scratch but so far I have only decorated 4 cakes. I don't have many tools and tend to improvise. I am a hobbiest and make cakes for my family and friends as gifts. I was hoping that more experienced cakers than me could have a look at the two cakes in my photos and give me some feedback. What do you think I could improve on or what could I have done differently? I am self taught so any feedback at all would be really useful. I am sure that sometimes I make this harder work for myself by not knowing what techniques or tools to use lol
I really appreciate it and thanks for your help in advance icon_smile.gif

I'm not sure what to tell you. You did an excellent job on both cakes. I really love the birdcage.

They look great. Do you have a cake circut?

I think that you did a wonderful job on both cakes and should be very proud of what you've done. If I were to nit-pic (and mind you I'm no pro at this either) but it looks like some of the petals on your pink peony got a little thick and that can make them more difficult to work with. And, an exacto knife will help you out bunches. I've also heard that before cutting if you let the fondant dry out for a little minute it makes cleaner cuts. I think you did great and look forward to seeing more from you! icon_biggrin.gif

Hi

thanks for your feedback. I don't have a cricut or even a decent cutting knife lol. I think that being able to cut with an exacto would make the cut outs look a lot cleaner. Also I agree about the thick petals. If I had had the time for a do over I would have, you are right it would look much better being finer. One of the issues I had with the car cake was getting the white fondant navy. I ended up using a whole tub of sugarflair paste colour. I think in future I will buy dark coloured fondants if I need them.
And the bird cage was about 10" high, covering it in fondant was challending to say the least. I may have cursed a few times that day! From what I have read on here I am lucky that it did not fall apart as I stacked the cakes without any support.

I think you did a great job! I have taken the wilton courses just to get my basics, but everything else I have learned is from this website and practice. Take advantage of Cake Central, it provides endless information for a cake decorator. Keep up the good work, you definately have the talent for this. icon_biggrin.gificon_biggrin.gificon_biggrin.gif
