Some of you may remember I posted about making a graduation cake for my cousin in law's daughter. I have been looking up different recipes to change some things up. I've spent so much time online getting ready for it. I was so excited, I was even going to throw in some cake pops as a surprise. Well my hubby went to visit the fam today and was supposed to pick up the money so that I could start buying supplies. Well, he came home and told me that her mother (the grandmother of the grad) had ordered a cake already!! WHAT? The mother had already given the job to me! I was so upset. I have been itching to bake something and was so excited to do this one since it was going to be some new stuff for me to try/learn. Booooooooo. I'm so sad!!
I don't get too many cancellations, but when I do, it usually leaves me in a funk! Most people don't realize how much time and effort is put in to a cake before it's even a batter, let alone after it's baked! a friend of mine ordered an angry birds cake and I spent a lot of time making all the birds, and he canceled it 4 days before it was due because he had broken up with his gf (who the cake was for). Now I have to find someone else to make an angry birds cake for so all my hard work doesn't go to waste! But, on the up side, at least you'll have a whole bunch of ideas for the next cake! If I ever get another angry birds cake order, I know it will be nice to not have as much work to do!
Same with me. My friend wanted me to make a tropical themed birthday cake. I searched online for days and came up with a great idea that called for gumpaste hibiscus and other tropical flowers. I was really excited because it would be my first time working with gumpaste flowers. A few days ago, I got a text that said, "If you don't feel like making that cake, I understand." Huh?
We all know what that means. Someone decided to go with another baker. Needless to say, I will only be bringing myself to the party. It's a bummer, though. I decided I would still make the cake and give it to my mom.
Whenever I have a cake cancellation, I don't worry about it. Usually, something else comes up, non-cake related, that I needed to tend to.
I just take it as a sign, that particular cake, just wasn't meant to be. My day was cleared to do something else, more important.
