I want to use a commercial kitchen to sell my cakes for 2 days a week with an approximate 10-20 hours per week. I have to do it this way for legal reasonings as we cannot bake out of our own homes. I have NO idea what the starting/going rate would be to rent out kitchens from restaurants..any one help me on an idea at all like monthly for these hours and days I provided? They also do NOT sell baked goods and they said I can maybe sell my baked goods there,,but could I do that in return partially for doing my wedding/other occasion cakes?? Please help as I need to know asap as I'm fishing but have no idea what rate I should be going for!

I can't speak to Charleston specifically, but from what I've seen going rates can be anywhere from $10-30/hour depending on location, amenities (on-site dry storage and fridge/freezer space may or may not be extra), number of hours, prepaid vs. postpaid, etc.

I would advise shooting for an hourly rate instead of trying to work out a deal where you pay for kitchen time with product. It will be to your benefit to get comfortable with your cost structure first before you work out how much to sell your product for wholesale.

AMagnus, you my jot have noticed, but Jen posted this back in May of 2011. Since then, a cottage Food Law passed. I think it's highly likely she operates under the new law or has since found a rental kitchen.
