What is your favorite new decorating technique? It can be new-new or new-to-you. Mine is the rose cake by "i am baker". It's so easy, and it wows people every time icon_smile.gif

I love working with Gelatin now that I've had a few opportunities to play with it. I can't wait to find more projects to use it on. Also I really like the cake play isomalt sticks you melt in the microwave.

hey
I don't have any favorites to talk about but could you tell me more about the rose cake, and possibly how the isomalt stickes work. I have heard about the rose cake but not seen it or any instructions, and seen the isomalt sticks but don't know much about them.
any further information on either of these would be very appreciated.
thanks
Labmom.

Funny you mention this cake.... I have to agree. I had to do this cake as soon as I saw it. Then I taught a friend to do it in just a few minutes and she had never decorated a cake before. Then another friend saw my photo of the one I'd done and asked me to do it in a square version for her wedding. Just did it today..... http://cakecentral.com/gallery/2035576 . I wasn't sure it would translate to a square cake so I did a practice dummy to see and sent her a photo. She loved it. The people at the venue asked what the cake was called, then in the same breath said, "It looks like the whole thing is covered in roses. Oh, I guess it's a rose cake."... Glad I didn't have to try to explain anything because I didn't know what I would say, not used to giving a cake in such an official (professional?) way before.

I too love using the gelatin bubbles. To test it further, we made one over 7 inches high, added fondant accents and turned it into a princess carriage. That was alot of fun. A friend was telling me earlier about how to make sequins out of it, but not sure what she said the technique is. But we're going to do it; I can't wait.

I'm even excited because a few weeks ago there was a thread about using sixlets instead of rolling fondant beads. I'm hooked, used them on top of each of the two bottom tiers of the squre rose cake. I could have gotten them on better, but they worked. And my friend was thrilled with her cake, so I guess they weren't too bad.

THANK YOU ALL.....I havebeen trying to come up with something different for my sisters bridal shower on saturday...I love this rose cake. And since I am throwing the shower and dont have a great amount of time to decorate a fancy cake, this will be perfect. My sister says if I dont make hers the best cake yet, then that means I dont love her very much...oh, the pressure. Too funny.

brett9008, you can't go wrong with the rose cake. It does make a huge impression, and it is quick and simple. And it's fun to do.

I just tried the rose cake too! So easy and beautiful! But my new Fav technique is using the high density foam roller to smooth buttercream! Tried my first one tonight. Not perfect but not bad! Someday I hope to get awesome flawless buttercream so I don't have to cover everything in expensive fondant that everyone peels off anyway! Thanks for the fun thread!

Mine will have to be the Rose technique as well. I think it is also making me lazy lol because I seem to be doing it each time I get a chance. THe only complaint I have received from one person so far is that there is too much icing. I don't know if I applied to much pressure. Will watch out next time.
