I'm planning to make an 8" round cake for a friend's birthday. She is a cheerleader and her favorite color is pink. icon_lol.gif I thought of frosing the cake pink and then putting pompoms on the cake in our school colors (red, white and blue)... but I wasn't able to find a picture of a cake with pompoms on it and I'm not sure how I would make them.
Any other ideas and suggestions will be greatly appreciated! icon_cool.gif

You could make the pom poms with a cupcake top or ball pan depending on the size you want, then ice by pulling away ( don't know the proper term), to get the effect you want.

I know you were talking of making a round cake but I can't resist showing you these at Cinda's Creative Cakes http://www.cindascreativecakes.com/Home/homeframe.htm Go to Photo Gallery, Sports, Page 6. They are done with the cuddly Bear Pan, don't know if you have it but they are really cute and you could make it resemble your friend and her uniform.

Just another idea
Good Luck

Thanks! Cinda's cheerleader cake is sooo cute! But unfortunately I'm not that talented yet icon_cry.gif ... but I plan to be someday icon_lol.gif (and I also don't have the bear pan)
I really like the pompoms on the cake that says blue devils... but how would I make them? (I'm to the point where I can figure out how to do something just by looking at it.) Would I need a special tip? Is the whole thing icing? Or are there cake scraps underneath? icon_confused.gif

Dandelion,
If I were to copy the "blue devils" pom poms, I would make two mini ball cakes and crumb coat them and then just use the star tip of choice to pull out the pom pom strings. The bigger the star tip, the bigger the pom strings will be.

The handles could be made out of fondant very easily.

Hope this helps!

Hm... fondant. I've never done that before, although I've seen many very impressives cakes decorated in fondant on this site.
Where can I get fondant?
What are mini ball cakes?

Mini Ball Cakes are made from a pan like the 3-D Ball pan only mini ones, cupcake tops would be similiar if you overfill so they are rounded, depending on the size you want or the rounded muffin pan, you could also use a mini round cake pan and overfill slightly so it has a rounded top if you want them bigger. The handles look to me like twinkies iced.

Just saw another cute Cheerleader cake on this site done by "ntertayneme', I hope I do this right http://www.cakecentral.com/modules.php?name=coppermine&file=displayimage&meta=allby&member_id=4769&cat=0&pos=23

Would be real easy to do on your round cake. The cheerleader is covered with small stars, I believe.

Just another idea !!!

Woah! It's a doll right? How would you put the frosting on the doll without there being holes or getting it al over her hair?

BTW, thanks for all the wonderful advice!!!

You can use your star tip and frost directly onto a nude doll. Put it into the position you want and secure it with straws or toothpicks to maintain its position, putting the straws so that they support the position, a little icing under it may help to. Depending on the position you want you may not need any support except a little icing. The doll on the afore mentioned cake is doing the splits. When I do doll cakes I wrap the hair in Saran and scotch tape it up until I have iced the body and let it set a bit then I uncover the hair and fix it the way I want, I like to use a little thread and put the hair up with an iced flower in it. I have a doll cake in my photos.

Hope this helps

If you decide to go with the ball approach...I am wondering if hostess snowballs would work. I do not have the mini ball and I am doing my daughter's cheerleading cake next weekend.
