I think either option would be good, The last time i made silohettes, i first printed pictures from the internet , And cut them out with a sharpie knife then i lay that across some modelling paste (flower/gum paste) and then cut that out, with a sharpie, and allowed it dry, then i went over it for the details

My daughter is a beatle's encylclopedia and I made her a Beatle's cake for her 30th BD: http://cakecentral.com/gallery/1157546

I did a FBCT. Used the record album (yes, the ALBUM .... daughter is a collector of beatle's 33rpm's!) for the pic.

Pssst!! She is such a beatles fan that I get her a beatles "something" every year for christmas. One year I had a woodworker friend make this shelf for her: http://www.flickr.com/photos/55969028@N00/5712784058/in/photostream

I'll be watching this one. My daughter is only 10 and is a huge Beatles fan. She has even requested a Beatles birthday. LOL!

maybe get a image like this and to do a transfer?

either way just type in printable, black and white image in a search and I would attempt to do the sides of the cake in a drum shape or musical notes
good luck!!! cant wait to see it!

I did a buttercream transfer Beatles cake and I think it turned out pretty good. I did the lettering in fondant and buttercream.

Picture is in my photos.

Here's my daughter's birthday cake from last year...I painted it on with black food coloring. She wanted the cover to Let It Be but I told her that I could handle a black and white line drawing, but I didn't want to deal with portraits of each of them! http://www.acaketoremember.com/images/revolver_cake.jpg

If you're doing silhouettes, fondant and an exacto knife works fine.
