Baby Cakes And Beheaded Bride Cakes
Decorating By Dani1081 Updated 16 May 2011 , 7:49pm by Ellie1985
Just saw the thousandth picture of a bridal gown cake that looks like the bride in her dress without a head, as well as the "real" baby cake for a baby shower. Maybe it's just me, but I gotta say that it creeps me out to think that someone will CUT into these cakes and EAT them. Really? Who wants to do that? What a lovely and festive party - let's eat the guest of honor. Ugh. Just had to vent.
I TOTALLY agree! The realistic looking baby's are just creepy...I don't like them! I think I would have to pass on eating the little thing.
I w/ ya on the baby, but I like the dresses, wait I think I have only seen dresses not dresses w/ arms and necks and no head? LOL Now I want to see that! I guess that would be weird.
I haven't had to do a baby cake, but I have done the dress form cake as well as some animals. This year was the first year in many I didn't make the Easter Lamb cake red velvet.
To me, it's just cake. It is meant to be eaten.
I won't do them, and specifically say those are creepy so don't ask. If I won't put it in my gallery of work, I won't make it.
I also think the pregnant belly cakes are creepy! I can't imagine cutting into that at a party lol
I SO SO SO agree! Just as a little entertainment from the very funny Jen Yates from Cakewrecks:

and

enjoy!
I agree with the "babies cakes," the babies butts, the whole babies as cake, even the pregnant bellies. Not cute.
But where are the beheaded brides? Can you post a link? I guess I am expecting to see a dress with arms, no head.
Otherwise, they're mannequins showing off a bridal gown, which is pretty normal.
Here is one of the bride with her limbs hacked off: lol

And here is an example of how designers brought the dress theme in without making it creepy:

Thank you, JenFailla. Yes, the first one is a bad representation of the nicely done mannequin cakes. The veil probably made it worse, but it is not a good job altogether.
I completely agree! All the realistic baby bottom & pregnant belly cakes freak me out! I don't understand why people enjoy these type of cakes. Who wants to eat something that looks so realistic, I sure don't!
The baby bottom and feet cakes freak me out. First the baby dove into an endless pit of something and only its butt and feet are sticking out... now lets eat it cause there is no way it will ever get out of that hole anyways!!! W*E*I*R*D
The others that bother me are the realistic versions of small dogs and cats. I had a Yorkie and could never eat one no matter how much yummy fondant it took to make it. I do credit the cake decorators for their work, its awesome, but would much rather see that in sculpture than cake.
The one that gives me the heebie jeebies like no other is the Star Wars Dead Tauntaun cake (google it) ...with a dude coming out and guts and entrails and eeeww I think I just threw up a little...
I also think the pregnant belly cakes are creepy! I can't imagine cutting into that at a party lol
I agree. I see pregnant belly cakes posted fairly often, and the odd baby shaped cake too. I always wonder why anyone would order such a cake, as they have to be cut up eventually. I doubt I'd want to be the one doing that.

And then there are also the pregnant belly cakes with a foot showing in relief form...or a picture of a sonogram in the middle of the belly. It's sad because it's a time to make a cute cake; there's so much out there!

About a year ago someone here on CC posted a cake of a baby just born with the blood and everything on it and it was on what looked like a cafeteria tray. I'm sorry if it was your cake but it totally creeped me out! I shutter just thinking about it. Also why are the pregnant belly cakes always so sexy?!?!?
Well Ellie, would you rather see this????
Uploaded with ImageShack.us Now that's real!
A baby shaped cake or pregnant belly cake or even a beheaded bride is really not the issue, pleasing the client is. It is our responsibility that the cake we are commissioned to do is the best possible rendition of what the client has asked for. It is our job to make it look as real as possible if that is what the client wants. I did a baby cake for a shower recently and it looked just like a real baby. I am proud to display it in my portfolio as it is an excellent example of the work I can do, whether I agree with the subject matter or not! (no, it was not red velvet, but if that was what the client wanted it would have been

A baby shaped cake or pregnant belly cake is the issue, the OP, Dani1081, made the statement that she did not care for them, thus starting this thread about them. I assume that she would not make one so therefore she wouldnt have a client with one... I am a hobby baker and I have done baby shower cakes, but always with a little fondant baby on top that can be removed. Its just a matter of personal tastes which is what this thread is all about.

Exactly! Just because we're the ones doing cakes doesn't mean we're not allowed to have an opinion!
I find them creepy. I had a girl a few weeks ago want a baby bottom cake for a baby shower, and I talked her into something else! I just sent her some alternate ideas and she fell in love with one of the pics I sent her! Lucky me!
Thanks, Jamie ...you do realize that I can never un-see that, don't you? Now I'm going to have to try and picture that time I accidentally walked in on Grandma when she was getting out of the tub, just so I can get this pic out of my head!
And for the record...I wont do a pregnant belly cake either. The thought of cutting into one completely creeps me out.

Pleasing the client only matters if you agree to make the cake. If I am asked, I say no to pregnant belly cakes, a cake shaped like a baby, & all X-rated cakes.
We all do what we allow ourselves to do. You choose to make them, I do not.
My bad, you're right, you were just wanting to vent... I guess I got defensive because I am extremely proud about how my realistic baby cake turned out. So I'll call a truce and stick with TexasSugar and take it in stride in the future. I love her idea of red velvet cake though
Awwwww...I like the little baby mold, it's adorable. I don't mind the pregnant belly covered, don't really like the one where you see the foot of the baby through the skin. To each his own....I don't like alot of the colors I see on cakes .... I think "who the *beep* would want that"...but someone does.....
Moovaughan you should be proud of your baby cake. It's wonderful!!! That is kind of the problem. For some of us the cakes are SO realistic looking that we are squeamish about the thought of cutting into "the baby"!!!
And Jamie--LOL, THAT'S a little more realistic then I thing any of us want to go!!!
