People That Think Their "cake Boss"

So I have to share my funny story of the week. I got an email about a month ago from my sisters bosses wife to do a cake for her husbands surprise birthday. I told her I would be happy to. She emailed me the next day and said she was sorry but her mother really wanted to do the cake because she thinks she is "cake boss". She was really embarrassed and went ahead and ordered a smaller cake for his real birthday a day before his party, which was also a surprise and held at his office. So I make my cake and they have their office party and everything was fine, they all loved the cake. Well the actual surprise party was last night and when I get there I took a look at the cake. It was awful. I don't know what it looked like before but it had split down the middle and was falling apart. It was sitting out for a few hours before it was cut and it got even worse, fondant was falling off the sides and cake was falling off the back end. To top it off, it tasted bad. It was pretty dry and the buttercream was way to sweet and just did not taste good. I just had to laugh. Bet she doesn't think she is " cake boss" now.
I'd just look at as a Mother wanting to make a special cake for her son. It may be crooked, have bumps, be tipping to one side, oversweet, or falling apart as you describe, but she made it with good intentions, and a good amount of love and pride.
I'm sure the Mom was thoroughly embarrassed to see her cake had split apart, but I'd wager a guess, most of the guests at the party were qute fine with that, especially her son.

Well I guess it could be two situations:
1) The MIL (it's the MIL correct?) is overbearing and wanted to run the show. She overestimated her skill level which led to the frumpy cake.
The next one I would prefer to envision....

She hid the cake in the corner so no one would see it but when the fondant started to fall off a few people tried to fix it.

That's pretty sad to have to deal with someone like that.
I bet if you asked the MIL, she would have a thousand reasons why the cake turned out why it did, and none of them had to do with the fact that she was over her head and should have kept it simple.
Yeah, she blamed it all on the heat and that did have an effect. She just made it way to tall with no support with totally uneven layers of cake since she made 2 flavor. It was suppose to be a pinball cake.

If thats the case, the whole cake thing is very weird. Why would the MIL want to make a cake for a SIL she doesn't like, even if she felt she was an expert cake decorator? I sure wouldn't. And, why would a daughter be so willing to say her mother is a show off, even if she was show off? My goodness, my Mother had her faults as well, but I'd not be willingly spreading that information around. All in all, the family in question, sounds to be a very dysfunctional family, and thats a shame.

I delivered a cake yesterday and the aunt felt the need to tell me twice that she used to bake cakes but told her niece she wasn't doing that anymore so she needed to find someone else. I don't know how long ago the aunt used to do cakes, but the niece had never tasted fondant before and didn't know how to make a cake sparkle (pearl, luster, or disco dust).
It's all good, though. Everyone was really impressed and I think I'll get some future biz out of it. Makes it worth listening to the relatives who "used to." lol
Making "cake boss" cakes LOOKS easy. Too bad they're not. It's truly unfortunate just how many people feel that way about their decorating skills, whether it is being egged on by family or friends that "ooh and ahh" to their face, thus giving them confidence to actually branch out and make their hobby a business. It's a shame that more people can't be honest and tell these people the truth about their skill or lack there of (in a gentle way, of course) to save them the heartache of wondering why their business is just not doing well. There have been several times on sites, including this one, that I have looked at cakes from business owners or people asking questions in forums stating that they were opening a business and wondered HOW they planned on managing to make any money whatsoever.
And, I am truly not trying to be rude. Just honest. Politically correct or not...
That's what I figure foxicakes...people think "hey, how hard can it be?" and then get into it.
I've actually had this happen a couple of times. A customer wants to order a cake then cancels because Mom, Grandma, Aunt, Mother in law, want to show of their cake skills. I've had 2 clients actually call me the day after crying about their cakes. I feel bad for them...but I also understand how family can put "pressure" on you to do something you wouldn't usually do.
