I need to make a batch of pre made white fondant brown. Can I do this by just adding cocoa powder. I've already made my trip to my local cake supply and forgot to buy more brown gel coloring. Now I have no time to go back and buy it... But I have loads of cocoa powder in my pantry just wanted to know if I can use that.

I can't answer your question but would ask: If you try it and it doesn't work, do you have the time/money to replace the fondant AND buy the color anyway? The end result is a trip to the store anyway but you'd be out the fondant and the cocoa powder, too. I'd just go get the color. icon_smile.gif

Can you take a small piece of fondant and do a test run? My thought is it may be gritty...I'm wondering if you could mix the cocoa into some shortening to make a paste and knead that in. No idea if it would work but straight cocoa I would think would dry out the fondant.

Do you have any chocolate - Merkens or chocolate chips? Make some candy clay and need it into the fondant (maybe a ratio 1 part candy clay and 4 parts fondant.) Trial a small piece of each. Probably won't be dark - but maybe it would work.

If you have other gel/paste colors, just mix red & green together and you'll get brown. You can then lighten it with white or darken it with black.

cool, I knew yellow and blue makes green, but not the red and green made brown

Adding colors opposite each other on the color wheel: red+green, blue +orange, or purple+yellow will usually make a muddy brown. Food colors are usually not pure colors, so the shade may vary, but it works pretty well. Actually, if you put all of the primaries together, you'll get a dark brown, too.
