I need to make 6 figurines (comic book characters). They will be about 4-5 inches high with a fair amount of detail. They will be placed on top of one or more cakes. The figures are in different positions... some kneeling, some standing and some at a very awkward stance (sort of like a lunge). I need to know what would be better to sculpt these figures out of? Chocolate or fondant. How long do they need to "dry"? They need to be fairly sturdy. I will be placing them onto the cake at the venue and dont want to risk breakage or cracks. Has anyone worked with both mediums for sculpting?

I've only used fondant with some tylose. But I know some people have gone into using modeling chocolate and prefer that. Sometimes, it's mixed with marshmallow fondant 50/50. I am not sure if anyone is going to eat them, but the modeling chocolate ones will be tasty. And those don't need to dry for a long time. I think it's a matter of choice.

I would use modeling chocolate because you will be able to smooth the seams with the heat of your hands. I honestly don't think modeling chocolate ever dries but it firms up. I would make them at least a week ahead of time and put them in a cool place in a cardboard shoe box. it keeps the dust off but it won't hold the moisture in.
