A few questions about cake dummies

I want to do two square cakes, 14" and 12". If I do the 14" in a dummie, will it match the 12" real cake? Maybe this is a strange question, but I'm just wondering if you could tell the difference.

Also what is the best way to adhere fondant to the dummie?

I was taught two ways..1-you can put buttercream right on the foam and then apply the fondant over the buttercream so it will stay in place and 2- I've been told to wrap the dummy in Saran wrap, then apply either the buttercream or use a brush and put water on the dummy for the fondant to stick to it. Some put water on the dummy with no Saran wrap and apply fondant. The fondant will last longer without the buttercream underneath.

I just spray the dummy with water and put my fondant right on top of the styrofoam.

Thanks. Also-- how in in advance can I do this? Just wanted the real cake and the dummie to match.

They should match. If you are coloring the fondant just make sure to make enough for both cakes to be the same color.

I have done both shortening and water on the dummies before laying on the fondant. Both works well. Just ensure you attach the dummy properly or else it moves around like mad especially the smaller sizes.

Oh- just one more question. Will the fondant on the dummie cake look fresh or will it tend to look dried out? The wedding is June 24th and I would just love to get this dummie done now.

I have one that I covered 4 weeks ago and it still looks brand new. You can rub shortening on it the day before to get it all fresh looking again if you think its looking tired.
