I was asked to make a two tiered "farewell" cake for Church. Square two tiered cake, white fondant, pale green ribbon around the bottom of the tiers and decorated with greenish and light purple hydrangeas. I see it like a wedding cake in my mind.

What can I do to turn it into a farewell cake? what can I add to make it look less wedding'ish"???

Any ideas? this cake is due tomorrow....

I think of a well made classic cake as being just that, not intended specifically for a wedding or any other purpose. To me, it's the colors that make a cake feel celebratory or somber. Go with your gut instincts on what looks nice and pay no attention to thoughts of a wedding, just beauty.

What is a farewell cake? Something for a funeral?

I agree that color sets the tone for the cake. Could you use colored icing or fondant to cover the cake. I know what you mean about seeming weddingish--I think if the cake is white it has that kind of wedding feel. Try a color that either compliments or contrasts with the ribbon. JMO.
