As pretty as the main cake is, did you all see the groom's cake? Now THAT'S what I'm talkin about

Elegant, and like someone else said, nice to see beautiful piping instead of ribbon. This will probably start a new trend for future brides. Got to add: Kate and her dress were stunning.
I loved the cake! The close-up shots are just so beautiful! Did anyone find out how many people worked on the cake and how many hours were put into it (especially because they made two of them!!!)? Just curious!
I think what I'm more curious to know is: were the cakes donated by the baker or did they charge for them?

Chocolate cake was not made by Fiona Cairns. The other baker was working with a family recipe, so he was mum about everything.
Fiona Cairns did release a lot of info, including the recipe, but I'm not sure I've seen how many people worked on it or how long it took.

It's totally stunning. I love the flowers and the piping work. But I don't see the Lambeth style represented in the 'scrolls, flowers, leaves', etc. I see extension work and lots of drop strings. I guess my old eyes just can't see it well enough. If there are touches here an there, they weren't on any of the close ups so I can't see it. Since I do a lot of Lambeth, I sure would like to!!
Am I the only one that though her dress looked like something from David's Bridals? Not that it was ugly or anything, but it just wasn't the heart-stopping OMG I was expecting. Was very plain.
I'm probably the only one since everything I'm reading is gushing over her and it. Oh well. I can be solo

I know. It wasn't what I would have thought of for a royal wedding. But I liked the simpleness of the gown. I thought it really said something about who she is & where she came from. She wasn't accustom to glitz & glamor, so she didn't wear it. I thought it was still romantic.
Of course if it was my daughter on the other hand, the gown would have been bling from head to train! LOL!
I did not follow the wedding or anything, but that cake is absolutely beautiful! Elegant, exquisite and just perfect for royalty without all the gaudy that you see so much of with celebrities nowadays. How amazing she didn't feel like she had to have every bell, whistle and rhinestone hanging on it! Even the bouquet she carried was so much smaller than I see most brides carry at everyday weddings.
I LOVE how Kate is understated and traditional--what a breath of fresh air.
I was expecting heart-stopping, too, and I didn't get it. But reading the descriptions of the kind of work that went into it, it must have been an amazing dress.
"French Chantilly lace was combined with English Cluny lace to be hand-worked in the Carrickmacross needlework tradition which originated in Ireland in the 1820s. The workers washed their hands every 30 minutes to keep the lace and threads pristine, and the needles were renewed every three hours to keep them sharp and clean."

this is so elegant! just like the rest of the wedding. i love the little touches of lambeth piping.
I agree
I loved her dress. I think Kate was VERY aware of people in the aristocracy/British press who were looking for ANY "garishness" in the day to tear her down with, kwim? If she went with something very frou frou and over the top, like Diana's dress, They would have said "Look how COMMON she is, dressing over the top... we just knew she couldn't handle being a royal.... She'll be such an embarrasment"
She had to tread a very thin line and basically show all the nay sayers how she's going to be for THE REST OF HER LIFE!

I'd love to see the needlework up close. I can't imagine the hours it took to do all that by hand.
I loved her dress! It was elegant and so appropriate for the occasion and the venue. When you look at her you are constantly drawn to her face and not the dress- the way it should be.
Ithought everything about the dress, make-up, etc. was perfect. Simple understated elegance. I thought she would have more sparkle, but so tasteful and classic. At least she won't be crying over her dress as did Princess Diana. She hated her dress.
The cake is so beautiful and elegant too. Incredible work they did on it.
I'm taking a Lambeth class in July, but I warned my husband NOT to expect that calibre of work from me!
(Notice how I spelled "calibre" the British way in "honour" of today's events.)

I'm with you...
The dress was ok, but not grand enough...the bottom was heavy, it needed lace or tulle or something instead of all the thick panels.
I didn't like the veil at all, her bouquet was too small, and her hair and makeup wasn't much different than her everyday look.
What the hell was up with all those bizarre hats http://www.people.com/people/package/gallery/0,,20395222_20485864,00.html
The cake, however, exceeded my expectations!
Loved the dress. Very classy. Sometimes less is more.
Re those bizarre hats - obviously Eugenie and Beatrice have not grasped the concept of 'less is more'!
so..maybe it's just the American in me...but, is anyone else bored with the entire cake being fruitcake?
Love the finished piece, tho!! I wonder how many brides are going to come to me with dreams of grandeur. And how many will be upset when I tell them I can't do anything remotely close to that HAHA

Well, you can, but that'll be $$$$$$$$$$ please!
Personally, I would liked to have seen the gumpaste flowers in realistic colours. A little too bland in monochrome for me.
Dress was beautiful, but my didn't Pippa almost steal the show! Both of them are entirely too thin (and Pippa needs to lay off the fake tan), lets hope they ate lots of cake at the reception. I predict we'll hear the patter of tiny feet on the horizon by the autumn
Party time! Dresses #2. I want to find out about cutting of the cakes. I really like this newspaper's coverage; big pictures!

It says here that it took Fiona 5 weeks to create the cake (someone else was trying to figure that out in this thread):

Her dress is beautiful and I wish my talent with cake designing was anywhere near developed enough to design a cake that stunning! I love the whole thing!!!
