I've tried it too - with little success. Some people say that Americolor has a darker red than Wilton. I just buy my red pre-made. I don't use it that often, so it's not a huge investment cost-wise. It saves me time-wise though.

I use americolor super red and fondarific fondant. Satin ice wont color as dark. If you only have satin ice then add some maroon into it and that should darken up the color.
But honestly buying it pre colored really is the best. So much less time and headache.

I've had success mixing in some Wilton Rose color to give the red some more intensity - just add a little at a time to avoid getting too pinky (this can sometimes be countered by adding some orange, but the less you have to complicate the color, the easier it is to deal with IMO).

Keep in mind too that red fondant will darken with time...so give it overnight to see how it turns out. I too would rather just buy the stuff..however I did that once for a 4th of July cake and bought Duff's fondant...big mistake. It stayed way too 'wet'. All I wanted to use it for was stripes but they kept stretching and pulling out of shape when I tried to put them on the cake. And that's after letting the strips sit for an hour before placement! Next time I'm using anybody else's but Duff's!

I use Duffs all the time. If I am covering a whole cake, I mix it with Wilton's fondant. If I am using it for decorations, I roll it out & let it sit for a few minutes to dry out & then cut. HTH!

I tried letting it sit out for an hour and it was still way too soft. I must have had a bad batch.

It still stays softer than most. If I have to stripe something with it, I roll it up like a cinnamon roll to move it. (ummm... cinnamon rolls) Sorry, past my bed time. LOL!

To help get a better red fondant you can add some of Wiltons red candy melts. This helps alot.
If the fondant is to wet/tacky try adding in a little powdered sugar until it is better.

Americolor super red and you don't need lots of gel color to get super red right away. Works 100% better than Wilton

Corella powder colour is the best for intense colour AND doesn't make the fondant soft. In fact, I used a bit too much once and it went so dark it was maroon. I love it.
