Ever have an epiphany and stumble onto something really helpful? I'm a horrible cake leveler. I can't freehand it and I mangle cakes with the ones I've purchased in the past. So I've become really adept at using toothpicks, marking out the perimeter, and cutting through the cake from there.

Tonight I was tired of using a measuring tape and tried to find something that was 1" so I could use it as a reference point. I discovered that if you take apart a clothespin, the groove that was designed to hold the metal hinge is exactly 1" and, when lined up against a cake, is the PERFECT guide for toothpicks. No looking at lines. Just stick your toothpick in the groove and it will automatically slide into the cake at 1" every time.

I thought this might be a neat trick to share with those who are similarly new to decorating and and do this as a hobby.
