That was fun! I'm sure the next cake will be much like these: massive. Actually, I've heard that there will be more than one cake, because there will be more than one reception. Í'll be looking forward to seeing what the latest take on royal wedding cakes will be.
Thanks for sharing. I was watching a programme about Royal Weddings, yesterday, that showed you more details of some of these cakes & spoke with the people that made them. Quite interesting.
I think the Queen Mum's was something when you consider it was made in 1923. The detailing is amazing.
It will be intersting to see if Kate & William go for a modern or traditional look. All I've heard so far is it will contain a rose, a daffodil, a thistle & a shamrock to represent England, Wales, Scotland & Ireland.

...I don't intend to sound mean, but to be honest the cakes on the website don't look all that impressive. I mean, don't get me wrong, they are great...but are they royal wedding cake standard? Hmm, I'm not so sure. Maybe the website only shows their commercially produced cakes, and not the one-of-a-kind wow factor stuff -? Anyone else feel like that?

I felt like that when I looked too, but like you say perhaps they only show the commercial stuff. I read somewhere that she has some connection with Camilla Parker Bowles son Tom so I'm guessing that's how she got the gig.

I agree about the stress- I don't think I could do it either! I read an article about Diana's wedding and the royal hat maker for that wedding didn't work for quite some time after because he had been so stressed and overworked!

Oh I don't know, I have her book and it didn't seem very commercial to me. I liked the fresh appearance of the items in her book. But based on the image Kate Middleton is projecting, the down to earth/pretty cakes of Fiona Cairns would certainly suit her rather than the la-de-da styles of some of the other royal cakes.
There has been some talk from the British decorating world about how the choise is such a slap in the face. One opinion expressed is that she was chosen to help show Kate's 'common' statice - the connection with the commoner.

I just remembered where I saw her cakes - Waitrose. I don't think she would be too impressed if she saw the state of some of the display cakes in the cabinet at Waitrose food hall in Bluewater some of them look like they have been hit by a truck!!!!
I think sometimes when you take into account the years ago that some of these old wedding cakes were made and probably the limited equipment compared to now they are quite amazing really. Still love Eddie Spence his RI skills for his age are still amazing. Wish when i shook that much piping I could still get it as perfect as him ha ha. Apparently mcVities is making one other cake - chocolate biscuit cake as that is William's favourite so that is a nice idea. It is a lucky gig apart from the stress I find it stressful enough doing cakes for any bride let alone future King's. Think I would have valium for breakfast every day lol!
Not impressed either with her cakes. I was very surprised at the choice.

I hear an interview Kerry Vincent did where she said it has been reported that the cake will be decorated in the Lambeth method. This is very English and more complicated overpiping process. You dont see this a lot in America. One of the old Wilton encyclopedias shows a lot of this method. Beautiful but tedious I would imagine.

Im not that fussed about the wedding(although for some reason my mom, sisters and their kids are coming to mine for a party ) but I so want to see the cake too!
I was watching a show on the upcoming wedding, and they were interviewing a royal cake decorator (not sure if he still worked for the Windsors or not). He was doing string work while being interviewed and he was just flying through it with perfect precision! After I picked my jaw up off the floor, I told my husband that I wished I could do that well in an HOUR much less in the 30 seconds this man was demonstrating!

I confess I've not seen inside her book, I've only seen her cakes as shown on the website.
Honestly her cakes in the book are very basic and rustic looking. If you want more pizazz, go with Peggy Porschen or Mich Turner's books.

I'd hardly say she was a 'commoner' when she makes cakes for Harrods & Fortnum & Mason. Perhaps it was because she started off baking out of her kitchen, like many of us, that people think she's a 'commoner'.

I have all the books for both designers and I really thought it would be one of the two.
