I am making a cake to look like the classic green mad hatter hat. I want to make it tapered like it's supposed to be. I know you do different sized cakes and stack them bigger on top to smaller on bottom and trim...right? It just makes me nervous as far as support with it getting smaller at the bottom.

Also, in the past I have had major trouble covering things that are tall, and this makes me really nervous because it is tall and gets small as it goes down so it will be extra challenging for me.

I was wondering if anyone who has done a cake like this could give me some tips on the trimming of the cakes to get the tapered look and how to cover it in fondant successfully. I will love you forever if you can help icon_biggrin.gif

Hi Whit, I'm not sure if I'm understanding you correctly, but it sounds like you want to make a topsy turvey type cake thats decorated like the mad hatter hat, right? (maybe not? lol) I've done a topsy turvey before, and I followed the instructions from the tutorial here on CC. I think it's under "articles".

As for a tip on carving the tapered part, to go from big at the top and little at the bottom, some people will carve it upside-down. So, if you want the bottom of the cake to be 6", and the top will be 8", I would put a 6" round on the top of your stacked cakes, exactly in the middle. Then take your knife and cut at an angle from the cardboard round on top, to the edge of the cake at the bottom. Is this making any sense?? If you do that all the way around, your top will be 6" and the bottom will still be 8". Then flip it over using big pieces of cardboard, and walla!

Thank you for your detailed instructions. I will for sure use them in the future when I do a topsy turvy cake. This cake is just in the shape of that hat, sorry if that wasn't clear enough
