I'm the cake mistress for our bunch of geeky gamer friends and it was suggested that I make an 8 or 10-sided die/dice for a birthday in the group. I have never carved anything remotely complicated and am stumped as to how to start. In theory, I believe that if I stack enough cakes to carve 2 pyramid shapes, I can skewer and frost them together at the base to make the dice shape. I also saw another thread where someone indicated that she had instructions for making a 20-sided cake, but as it was 2 years old, I don't know if that person is still around. Any help whatsoever is most gratefully appreciated by this rookie. Thanks!!!

wow, that will be something when its finished.

If it were me doing that cake I would make a large base and make it look like a gamers table or even a game board if that is part of your gamer's RPing.
Then the die wouldn't have to be huge, just a larger accent to the cake. It would be the centerpiece just not the whole enchilada. Stack enough cake layers high and it could be carved out in one thick mass without having to skewer and frost them together. Icing works well to hold layers together.
Mostly because if you do skewer and frost, there could be the more likely happening of it falling apart.

An 8-10 sided die feels like it shouldn't be that hard, as its just a lot of slanted cuts on the cake. I would hate to see you do a 20 sided icon_lol.gif

I have nothing helpful to add, but I just wanted to say that it sounds like a fantastic idea and I'll be watching this thread with interest. My little brother's birthday is coming up in May and he's a D&D'r....

I ended up making a 20 sided dice BECAUSE of CakeCentral!! Someone asked how to make one, on a thread just like this. I showed the idea to my brother like, "Could you imagine?-I can't wait to see that cake!" That poster never posted one, so IDK if she made it.
His friend had a going away party a few months later & my brother mentioned he wanted a cake for him. I looked at him and his face just said it all. "You want THAT cake, don't you?" He just nodded happily. LOL!

Ok I really want to make the 20-sided die. Afraid of fondant! Thinking I'm going to stack circle cakes and carve. But then maybe use normal decorating icing?

AUpdate (years later- sorry): I used the "durable cake recipe", which I have since been using for every single cake I have made. But the dice were horrible. I was unwilling to figure out a bunch of math and thought I could just wing it. Nope. Silly. But funny (I am not a professional). Also, it was an 8 - inch high die and after a couple hours it started to sag. Too heavy I think. So when making something that big, with the dense durable cake recipe, I think it needs to have a cardboard layer somewhere in there, and dowels.
