Make the stripes out of fondant and place atop the buttercream

You could pipe the stripes on (draw outline and fill in), then smooth the stripes out with a small angled spatula. Fondant would look better though, if you can talk her in to fondant stripes to peel off.

Why take them off? I've made two zebra cakes with black fondant and I didn't tell them to take the fondant off. I iced the cake with a white buttercream first, then applied the fondant stripes.

I made my sister's last birthday cake out of buttercream. I just piped stripes on (using chocolate as the base to make black BC), though I imagine fondant would also not be difficult.

Here's mine: http://i56.tinypic.com/2dbovat.jpg
It was my first stacked cake of any kind, and it's not without many flaws. But the stripes are really easy. Just be natural, make each one a little different and not too geometric.

There are stencils that you can use that have the zebra pattern. Here's a link that will show you how to stencil buttercream if you don't already know how.

You can also paint the stripes directly on the buttercream by using a light touch, a soft brush, and black petal dust mixed with an extract or everclear alcohol. I've done leopard spots on buttercream this way. You ca..n use a stencil or just do it freehand. Th zebra stripe isn't a very complicated pattern. HTH! icon_smile.gif

Thanks calicopurr. I would imagine it dries faster than vodka.

I saw a cake on a website but can't seem to find it now, but they did it with a crusting buttercream, and once it crusted they used a foam roller to make it flush with the rest of the cake, It looked great!!! HTH's
