This one was done all in buttercream with sugarpaste decor. It was a lot of fun making the buttercream look old.

Don't get me wrong, there is certainly an art involved with covering in fondant, but it seems easier and there appears to be more room for error and such. A smooth buttercream surface with nice clean, crisp edges and corners is so challenging and rewarding to accomplish and just ... breathtaking to me. I HOPE to get good at that one day...

I agree! At first I loved fondant, now I hate it. I prefer to do bc all the way with fondant accents only. I love the challenge of buttercream! And the look and taste too!

Holy man, that's BC wow the skulls are so great I did not know ppl could get that kind of clean detail w/ BC!

@sweetmonkeycheese. Wait, need to clarify, the skulls and eyes are actually sugarpaste blended into the buttercream at the edges to make them look like they were pushing out of the cake from inside. I wish I was that good at buttercream!

I also would love a forum of all bc cakes. When I first found CC I was all about the fondant and covered my son't birthday cake with it because I thought it would be a nice canvas to work with. My family doesn't care much for the taste or texture of the fondant on a cake and I have begun to experiment with the bc, but find that it really is a skill to get that smooth look and crisp edge. I guess practice is what it takes. What method do people prefer to use in order to get a smooth finish to their bc???? I have read about the viva method, melvira's method, etc., but haven't tried them yet.

I ordered the DVD "Perfecting the Art of Buttercream" by Sharon Zambito. It was the best smoothing process I have seen yet. I have only tried it once but I could really see the difference from my previous attempts.
