If you could make anything you wanted to for a 9 year old girls birthday, what would you make?

I joined an organization that makes birthday cakes for foster children, but they can't give us any info other than name and age. I'm afraid I'll pick something she hates!!! lol help please?

That's a tough one.... but I'd maybe stay away from any characters or specific themes. I'd stick with generic shapes like polka dots, stripes, etc for decoration, and use vibrant colors like pink, purple, light green, etc. Fancy it up with some fun colors and I'm sure she'll LOVE it. icon_biggrin.gif

Maybe try to avoid all pink. Pink or lavender accents would be find, but add other colors, too.  Some of my daughter's friends are sick of pink.
Aqua blue or turquoise and lime green combination is very popular right now.

There's the animal print option. Oh, my 9-year old daughter just told me that is for 'teen agers'!

I would not do something make-up, shoe, purse, cell phone, or fashion related as many girls are not into this sort of thing yet. My daughter just turned nine and if she got that kind of cake, she would not like it. (her birthday party was sushi themed; she's a bit different than most.)

Daisies, ribbon roses, or other fun flowers are good. Fancy roses or realistic probably would look too old-fashioned. Not too flowery though, just some accents. Maybe a lime green, hot pink, or bright purple geerbera daisy would be fun.

The idea of dots and stripes is good. Squiggly lines are good too.

If you are doing a sheet cake, then something like these would be good. This idea of having a decorative side, then some kind of strip or bow to separate the writing area really appeals to my daughter. She said it looks fun.

Wow thanks for all those great ideas!

I wish I could ask, but the lady that runs the organization has no contact with the parents or the child. She just gets a list from DHS of the names and ages and that is all.

I also bake for foster kids the social worker told me their interest and style, favorite colors they just can't tell you last name. If the social worker didn't offer this info I bet you they just didn't think of it. They just need to ask the child and relay the info to you. Sometimes the worker doesn't bother because they are busy, but I'd ask anyway. Before baking, I was a foster parent for 12 yrs. I wish someone had done this for my kids.
Kudos for you!

Thanks again for all the suggestions. I posted a pic of the finished cake in my pics. It is the blue and black sheet cake.
