I've uploaded a photo of some musical-themed cookies onto my profile. Well, they were for a raffle prize. My 16 year old nephew organised a charity jazz evening, along with some other pupils from the 6th form at his school.

I didn't realise, but my cookies were the ONLY raffle prize, LOL!

Well, tickets were selling really well. People really were being very generous.

About three quarters of the way through the evening, my brother-in-law came up to me and said that people thought the cookies were really nice.... Erm... and that... erm... there were only 4 left!

WTF???? icon_eek.gificon_eek.gificon_eek.gif

One of the students selling the raffle tickets had left the box of cookies near the table where the cupcakes for dessert were. And someone had mistakenly thought the cookies were part of the dessert!!! icon_cry.gificon_cry.gificon_cry.gif She'd taken 4 for her table, then someone else came and took 4.

I know it was a genuine mistake - albeit a BL**DY STUPID one. I mean, the box had red curling ribbon around it (over the top, cross underneath, then brought back up, tied and curled!) and that stuff ain't easy to break! AND there were stickers, sticking down the three sides of the box that opened. So, quite frankly, they must have really wrestled to get that box open!!

AND, when the students were selling the raffle tickets earlier in the evening, they took the box of cookies around with them, so everyone got to see them.

The person who did it is friends with my BIL and SIL. They wouldn't have done it if they'd realised. I just can't quite believe how stoooopid they were NOT to have realised! Anyway, she felt awful and so bought 2 bottles of wine as a replacement raffle prize.

At the end of the evening, my nephew has raised over £720 for Children With AIDS Charity - a charity that is very close to our hearts! So that's the main thing.... but I'd spent ALL DAY on those cookies! icon_cry.gificon_cry.gif

I am applauding the way your talent raised such money for the cause and cracking up over your story! icon_lol.gif I've said for a long time, "Put the word 'free' in front of food and people act like they haven't eaten in a month!" icon_lol.gif

I work at a hotel where we provide a free breakfast and dinner, and 3 free alcoholic drinks at our bar. We also provide free popcorn and soft drinks until 10 p.m.

In addition to our free stuff, we have a "pantry" where guests can purchase small items such as playing cards, cough syrup, deodorant, hair spray, etc. and we have a refrigerated section where they can purchase iced tea, gatorade, juice, ice cream, frozen pizza, Lunchables, etc.

I am constantly surprised at how many people who ask "Is this free?" (Uh .... did you see the big signs in there with the PRICES listed?). One guy started across our lobby with a handful of stuff and I had to flag him down to come to the front desk to pay for it. He was genuinely surprised, "Oh, I have to PAY for this?" He had 3 pizzas, 3 lunchables, some drinks ..... totalling over $35!!! icon_surprised.gif

Your cookies turned out great, I can see why so many wanted them! What I don't understand, and makes me laugh actually, is why did she replace the cookies with wine? And for KIDS? Maybe I'm not understanding something. also, if my child had been the winner of that raffle and brought home wine, I would not have been so happy, since we don't drink alcohol at all. She should have paid you to make a replacement batch of cookies.

Well, as you said, at least they were able to make a good donation for the charity; that's awesome!

Sorry, I didn't explain very well....

... the evening was for adults. There were a few 16/17/18 year olds there, who were performing and in between their performances they were selling the raffle tickets.
