Cracking up....

I am pretty new to this cake decorating game - and although I have done a few cakes now this seems to be a common problem for me.

When I put the fondant on the cake (pretty sure I have the thickness correct) I end up with these "cracky bits" going over the edges and around corner. What am I doing wrong & can you help me to avoid thise/repair it. Its very frustrating.

I have just finished this peacock wedding cake & thought I would attach a pic so you can see what I am talking about - its really noticeable along the top tier....

Any help would much very much appreciated.

Working quickly and trying not to pull downwards on the fondant will help with that. Great peacock, by the way - I love its wings

i was having the same problem and was advised to make sure my cakes were sitting on the counter and not elevated (they had been elevated before). that way, the fondant doesn't hang down and pull. i tried working with the cake resting on the counter, and i didn't have any tears that time. hope this helps.
