The Cake (My Very Own Wedding Cake)

Ok so heres the deal, I will be making my own wedding cake (with the help of my amazing father) Now I have been toying with flavour ideas for the past month, The thing I am unsure of is do I go for flavours that my H2B and I personally like or do we think of our guests also?
Is it acceptable to make each tier a different flavour??
In your oppinion would it be best to go with flavours that compliment each other?? OR is it free riegn and I can go nuts and choose a varied selection??
Obviously I want the cake to be enjoyed both in looks and in taste,
God this wedding stuff is sooo confusing.
I think that it is fine to make the tiers different flavors and whatever you want. You might not want to make it too crazy because you don't want a ton of leftovers. Good luck and Congratulations.
I encourage all my brides to make every tier a different flavor. And no they don't have to go together because they won't be served on the same plate.
I made my DD's wedding cake(s) and frankly, even as a professional who had help and even though I contracted out with my employee at the time, the complete delivery, I would never advise a bride or a MOB to make the cake.
Congratulations! I made my own wedding cake too. Looking back I'm very proud that I did but I kind of sort of wish I had left it up to someone else. It was a lot of work.
Ive told this story before but I think it got lost in the crash. I attended a wedding years ago for a couple my dh and I are friends with. They had this amazingly beautiful 5 tier brides cake. It sat untouched besides maybe 3 slices that I saw her grandparents take. They also had a giant peanut butter cup grooms cake that, literally, every one of the 200+ guests in that reception hall were lined up to eat. I got a paper thin slice of that grooms cake and it rocked. No one ate the brides cake because, as pretty and it was, every single tier of it was carrot cake, the brides favorite flavor of cake. It was also covered in fondant which I heard later tasted gross. While carrot cake was the brides favorite flavor of cake it was not what her guests wanted. Sometime after the wedding my dh and I went out to dinner with them and I asked about the cake. The groom groaned and said they had thrown the entire cake out. I know it cost them a pretty penny and to have to throw it all out. Sad. But the bride wanted carrot cake and boy did she ever get it.
So unless youre going to eat the entire wedding cake yourselves Id go with flavors that your guests will like. If you plan to keep the top tier Id make that whatever flavor you prefer but make the rest of the cake flavors that others will enjoy. You dont want to get stuck with a bunch of leftover cake.
I recently made my own wedding cake in January (with the help of a friend who owns a cake shop and offered me her work space)...since my hubby doesn't even like cake, I make two of the tiers 'wedding' cake and the bottom tier lemon (my fav). I LOVE being able to say that I did that myself.
BUT...BUT...mine was a small event - actually, it was more of a New Year's Party than a traditional wedding (we were married at the stroke of midnight, 1/1/11). I couldn't imagine taking that on AND planning a full-blown traditional wedding ceremony.
I would make the largest tier a "traditional" wedding cake flavor, but ABSOLUTELY make the other tiers whatever your heart desires!! Make them mud flavored if that is your favorite, YOU are the bride this time love!!! Don't get too wrapped up in pleasing everyone else, it's your day to shine
