food coloring & candy melts

i'm looking for a specific color blue and can't seem to find any chocolate melts exactly the color i hoped for. Is it ok to use food coloring in chocolatge mets as you would do with icing/frosting? or does it change the consistency of the melts?

I have used gel colors when making candy clay...no problems at all. I mix it in the corn syrup then add to the melted disks. HTH icon_smile.gif
In my opinion, cake should be at the base of the Food Pyramid.

I found out the hard way it does cause the melts to sieze if you dont do it properly.

I added gel coloring to white candy melts and it siezed on me, i was able to save the melts by adding shortening to the mix and stirring constantly until the mixture seemed smooth and creamy.

Knowing this, I now add the coloring to the shortening and then add the candy melts to the mixture.

No siezing and comes out great every time.

how much shortening do you use? does it matter if its merkens or wilton candy melts?

I wish I would have tried this last night, I used oil based coloring in my candy melts and couldn't get the blue I wanted either! I was scared to try my other food coloring. Next time I'm trying it with shortening. I love all the tips I get on here!

I use oil based colors (candy color) with the candy melts. I mix the color in after I melt and before I add the corn syrup.

why do you use corn syrup?

she uses corn syrup cuz she is making candy clay, not for pouring
