I recently purchased the Cricut Cake Mini through JoAnn's for $99.00 and free shipping, I thought that at least it wasn't as big of investment as the regular Cricut Cake so if I couldn't figure it would be less of a loss financially.

Well, after several tries, I think I have it! I was able to successfully cut out all the letters and decorations I wanted. Woo Hoo!

I was very leary about this purchase after reading all the "love/hate" threads about Cricut in general. I can definitely see where this is going to help me create much cleaner lettering and designs for my cakes.

Don't let the name fool you, it is definitely more than a HOBBY!

Congrats. That's awesome that you got it to work for you. I'm hoping to win one at the North Texas Cake Show at the end of April. I know it's a long shot but a girl can dream!

Best of luck to you sillywabbitz! I won $100 in an employee give a way a couple weeks ago, putting towards my future AGBAY purchase!

Any tricks you can pass on? I have the bigger cake one and cannot for the life of me get it to work. I tried the fondant/gumpaste in the freezer trick to no avail. I am frustrated and my hubby thinks it is going to just sit in the box collecting dust.

Has anyone compared the regular cricket adapted for cake to the actual "cake" cricket? I have the regular cricket that I adapted for cake by cutting off the rubber rollers. Dont want to invest in a "cake" cricket if I will get the same results. Right now I have to work all day just to get a few letters to cut cleanly.

I found that the longer you let your fondant set the easier it is to cut, plus rolling it very thin. I rolled out my fondant out let it set for a few minutes and cut and it didn't work well, so rolled it out again, went and did a few things (about 6-8 mins) came back and then cut it and it worked perfectly. In reading the other threads, I think that your climate has something to do with it too, you have to adjust for humidity etc.

Sherylshirley- I bought a Cricut Expression off ebay brand new, won it in a auction for $50. and thought I would try if for cakes, didn't work! So I now use it for paper projects. This Cake Mini is perfect for someone like me, for now I make cakes for my friends and family, I am very OCD and have to have every toy available for cakes! DH lectures me on my "cake spending" all the time. I decorate P/T for a store and spend every penny I make on cake toys. HA! I am one of Ebay's best customers!

I'm going to have to try letting it set, I also tried the freezer trick and was very disappointed when it didn't work icon_sad.gif

The only thing it has worked for is modelling chocolate but as soon as you pick it up to place it, it starts melting in your hands >.<

The Agbay is totally worth it. I'm a hobby baker too and refused to spend that much money on a cake tool but everytime I bought anything I kept thinking of my Agbay so I started a jaricon_smile.gif It didn't take me long to get enough money to order the Agbay. I couldn't be happier!

Freezer.... plus thin fondant/gumpaste, plus adequate layer of shortening on mat. It's like the fire triangle.... take away any one of the three things and it likely won't work - at least that's what I've found in my many sessions of trial and error....

I was very frusterated with my cake cricut as well. A friend recommended to start reading blogs for questions and answers. After trying on my own, then reading problems and solutions online. Last night finally...success!!! I used fondant mixed with tylose powder. The tylose will dry the fondant so its much firmer when using. I was able to make the butterflies I need with not to much of a hassle!! It worked great for me, i have 100 butterflies to make so i am really wanting to use my cake cricut for the job it just adds more detail than a cookie cutter! Hope this tip helps!
