I usually use wilton's fondant but I wanted to try the satin ice, so I ordered it from the bakers kitchen and used it for the first time this weekend. I say it's very good for making accessories as it is very smooth and pliable, but i had a time trying to cover my cake, is so soft reminds me of duffs fondant. Also it crusted in a weird way when I mixed it with gumpaste. Just wanted to touch base with my cake buddies and see what you thought. Can't decide if I want to use it for some wedding cakes I have coming up or not. I'm thinking maybe i just rolled it to thin.

It stinks, in my opinion, doesn't taste good either. I just bought some Massa Neutral and tried it for the first time and I love it. It's by far the easiest to work with and tastes good too and I have tried them all...from Wilton, fondarific, fondx, chocopan, pettinice.

I like the taste, but it dries really fast so you have to work really fast or keep it covered- I learned that the hard way... I prefer to make my own MMF. It's not that I actually enjoy making fondant, but I'm a hobby baker and it's a lot cheaper! I use Rhonda's ultimate MMF and it tastes really good!

I personally like Satin Ice. I use it anytime I have to use colored fondant. I have also mixed it with the Wiltons and it works great. The SI gives it the pliability...if you know what I mean.? I like the taste of it. Just my opinion

It's OK with the lighter colors. Taste is OK. However, I find that with the darker colors it dries out too quickly. I prefer Fondx for my white (because its a little less expensive and easier to find in larger tubs. And, I add flavoring to it to make it taste yummy. Most candy flavors will work with fondant. Cotton Candy is clear, so wont change the color of your fondant. I also like Fondx Elite for the dark colors, and already has a pleasant taste and smell.

I love FondX for white fondant. I used to like Satin Ice but I think they changed something and I no longer am comfortable working with it, and FondX tastes tons better.

I still like Satin Ice colors as far as how they look but do not enjoy working with it.

It's ok I prefer the make my own MMF. Also I find that the Satin fondant dries out really fast so you have to work with it fast. I would use it again but only for accesories not to cover cake.

I tried it and I dont really care for it. I think it drys to fast, gives elephant skin and it seems to tear a lot. I like fondarific the best but I have 40lbs of Satin Ice I must use so I am now using a mixture of 50/50 fondarific and Satin Ice. That seems to work well.

The reason I do not care for fondarific is because its too oily and I often airbrush over fondant...and the airbrushing tends to bead up on the fondarific.

I have just started using Satin Ice as well. It is softer than others and does dry out but I also use 'the mat' so that helps it from drying out too quickly. I sometime like its plability and sometimes wish it had the toughness that is the yucky tasting wil... one. It does taste good though! That is important to me so I am learning how to work with it effectively.

i like the mat too. you can roll it thin.

All commercial fondants smell and taste like chemicals to me, except Choco-Pan. I make MFF with white chocolate candy melts and it taste better and cost less than anything I can buy pre-made.

I use the Buttercream Flavored Satin Ice and like it a LOT!

Is the buttercream satin ice pure white? B/c I know Duff's buttercream fondant is off white, but it sure does taste and smell delicious!

I agree that Satin Ice is nice for their bold colors (red, black) but for anything else I usually make MMF, which works well for me

I've tried SI and Fondx, and i must say Fondx is much better, it tastes really good and smoothes out perfectly.

I used to use Duff's but it is soooo expensive without a Michael's coupon. I recently ordered SI and I do like working with it. I use shortening and minimal powdered sugar so it greatly reduces the elephant skin effect. Plus, I can buy it in 20 pound tubs for $45.

I really like it to do bows, flowers, figurines, etc because it does dry so well. Also, it takes airbrush color very well!

I use Satin Ice or Wilton for bows or figures. However, l like to cover cakes in Carma.

ok! Great responses, what's MMF (marshmellow fondant?) and where do you get the Carma. Yes I agree DUFF is SUPER expensive, and satin is is a lot cheaper.

I order Carma from www.fondantsource.com It is about $80 for 15 pounds, not cheap but well worth it.

So far between Wilton, marshmallow fondant, Choco-Pan, Satin Ice and Fondx - I like Fondx the most. I really like the taste and ease of working with it. I'm not crazy about the taste/smell of the Fondx Elite, but am looking forward to trying their new line for colors that's flavored like the original. When I tried Satin Ice, I really liked the colors but wasn't crazy about the elephant skin problem.

Ok.... I used satin ice for a long time, and was very pleased with it until I found this little secret. After getting frustrated with the cost of it, and the fact that it will crack when it dries... I started playing around. I didn't like the way MMF worked ( I never could get a really smooth finish).
So I started playing around, I mixed MMF and Satin Ice half and half... and it's great. It gives the satin ice the mmf taste, it works better, not as much stretching and ripping.... and it doesn't crack and crumble when it dries. You can taste the Satin Ice at all, only the MMF......and it cut my cost by almost half!!!!!

I use the Satin Ice in black and red (because it's what I can get in colored fondant). I generally use FondX white and color it for everything else. I had a chance to use Carma a few months ago and I'm in love with it - they make a special blend for tropical climates and it's the best I've found for Cancún.

where do you get the fondx from? just the sight that comes up when you google it?
