Hi all!

I see a lot of pretty cakes that have used the Tappits and really like the way they look. I'm still learning how to write and really think I would appreciate the cut out letters.

My questions would be:

Do you need a 'base' with the tappits or do you just buy the different letter sets and use it?

Is there any other brand of cut outs that you might recommend?

Thank you for any insight!

I love my tappits. You dont need a base, just the latter cutters. There are different brands but I only have tappits. I learned a trick with tappits to keep the gumpaste or fondant from sticking in the cutters. Roll your paste thin, cover with a single layer of Saran and push the tappit into the paste on top of the Saran wrap. I was so pleased with how well this worked. I can't write on cakes and therefore I don't icon_smile.gif

Clicksticks are new and supposedly easy to use becauase they have an ejector, but Tappits are great once you get the hang of them. No base is needed. thumbs_up.gif

I bought my funky letter tappits about 1 year ago, tried them, hated them, but them away. Wanted to try them again a couple of weeks ago, so I found a youtube video by Lorraine McKay on using tappits. Used all her tricks and now LOVE THEM. I've used them on 4 cakes in the last two weeks. LOL

Haven't heard of the clicksticks, but now I'm interested - might check those out for different lettering.

Just purchased some, I haven't receive them yet, but can't wait. I bought them from site in United Kingdom. Both sets with shipping were what I would have had to pay for one set here in U.S. I'll have to watch the youtube video.

I love my Tappits , now that I've figured them out. My suggestion to try is to roll your fondant out very thin (1/8 - 1/16 in.) and then LET IT SIT, for at least 20 min or longer. I experimented the other night by adding about a teaspoon of fixodent denture powder to a tennis ball size glob of MMF....the letters came out even better than ever!!!(the pink lettering on my 'Princess is Thirty' cake).
When I cut out the letters, I push down and then, most important, I 'scrub' the countertop with the tappit- sliding it back and forth and side to side, then I use a skewer to pick out the excess fondant from the loops or edges of the letter, and then tap it hard, letters come out perfect! icon_biggrin.gif

Corrie, you're cake is exactly why I asked about the tappits! I really like the look of your letters, they complete the cake so nicely! icon_smile.gif

I just purchased some sets this morning and hope to have them for a cake next weekend.

Thank you to everyone for the great tips!

just make sure you play around with them before your cake is due...it took me a few times to figure it out without mangling the letters... icon_lol.gif
