Ok so stupid me has learnt the hard way when to say no! Well at least I hope I have. Company rang on Monday to ask me to a do a cake for Thursday, a two tiered number, but it quickly escalated to a 5 tiered number.

You would think even at that I would say no, but not me! The cake was to be painted all gold with copious amounts of glitter all over it. Mind you "the cake" they said "would in all likelihood would not be eaten". So I say yes and way I go.

Now I should have realised that no image I have seen ever paints the entire cake gold..... and I didn't wonder why..... the job at hand was taking all my thought processes (as little as they are). Then I go to put the copious amounts of glitter on three of the tiers, only to find that it wasn't as simple as water and paint on. I couldn't figure it out why it was not going right. If I used water the gold would come off and the glitter as well. If I used alcohol the glitter wouldn't stick. To make this story shorter, taking a shower the morning after the big disaster I realise that perhaps I should have not painted the tiers that were going to have the glitter all gold. Great my brain tells me after the event.

Then in transporting the cake, every tier cracked and because of the gold paint, it was obvious. Argggghh. I would have taken a picture of it to show you guys but my brain didn't remind me to do that. I was so disappointed that I didn't want a reminder of the cake!

Anyone else been this dumb? icon_sad.gif

I make at least one frustratingly stupid mistake each time I make a cake. Sorry about your gold and thanks for warning the rest of us.

I guess you don't have an airbrush? I learned this by trial and error...Whenever I have to do a Gold or Silver fondant tier, I tint the fondant grey for silver, light yellowish brown for gold, then airbrush the color on. Before, I was trying to get a deep silver color from white fondant and it cracked and looked like crap because of all the paint on the tiers!

This is why this thread exists, so we don't make the same mistakes. Thank you for sharing, and KarolynAndrea thanks for sharing that information as well.
