Happy chicken-ing. My parents worked at a chicken farm when I was an infant so my first memory is of chickens all around me.

oh goodness! i havent been around in awhile lol

our chickens are pets, not food! they are a free range flock and we only eat non fertilized eggs. we love our chickens very much!

even though she didnt touch the actual cake (she only messed up the buttercream on the side) i did start over. even though im working out of my home kitchen i make sure that myself, my workspace, and my products are as sanitary as possible!

having the chickens in the kitchen is not a normal thing in our house. even though we keep babies indoors until they are old enough to join the flock in the nests, they do not stay in the kitchen nor are they allowed to wander around the kitchen. this was a one time thing where chicken patty just got away from me and was a little quick for me to grab her before she decided to hop up on the table!

chicken patty and her sisters have since become old enough to sleep out doors and we currently have no chickens sleeping indoors.

and lastly, all the cakes i make are for family, friends, or friends of friends. all my customers are aware i have many pets!

I think this story is hilarious, and who doesn't have an embarrassing story about something dirty/gross/unsanitary somehow working it's way to a cake? That's the nature of the beast.


Also, as someone who not only hunts, but who raises our own meat rabbits-- I do indeed call the adults "pets" while I call the babies "food." I eat animals I've raised because I love animals- because I refuse to eat something purchased from the grocery store, wrapped in plastic, having no idea what it's eaten, how it has been treated, or whether its meat is even healthy for my family to consume. I believe whole heartedly in my evolutionary right as a human to eat other animals, but I believe even more strongly in the rights of the animals I consume to carry out every function of life that they were meant to as well. SO... before throwing stones, and placing judgments on the actions of others... please think some kinds thoughts and let your comments be useful, not harmful.

corpsequeen no need to defend yourself! The story was great, my family & I got a laugh out of it and I wish I could have my chickens be free ranging. (And my Peacocks - I love my Peacocks!) Unfortunately, we have way to many predators around to be able to do that, but it's a great way to control ticks and other bugs!

Its the classic CAKE Survival story... you never know where or when something is going to attack your cake! Today it was a chicken - tomorrow could be a DH, your kids, or a dog... lol

Animals don't know any better.. there only let to do what we let them.. kind of like real kids.
I had my lab eat half of my grandsons first birthday cake because someone let her out of the bedroom and the storage room open. She enjoyed herself. Me not so much. A day i will never forget. But how about this..
I have customers who experience cats laying on the boxes or kids getting to the cakes.. but how about one who called me to come that they needed the cake refrosted asap..I. got to the house and the whole kitchen is filled with geese.. adult geese... it was a total mess... the cake and the kitchen.. the geese were everywhere... I never knew these people lived with geese in there house ... I explained that I couldn't fix the cake... and that they needed to perhaps go to a bakery and purchase another..and perhaps keep it where it would be safe until there party perhaps in the car or somewhere... Don't know what they did but it was truly a gross situation I would take your little patty over the whole flock of geese anytime.

I'm scared to death of chickens....got chased and pecked by one when I was little but I did laugh at the story....Cute..

One Thanksgiving, my mother made 6 pies and put them on the ironing board in the basement of her split-level home to finish cooling. We all were instructed not to go down there for a few hours. Someone forgot and opened the door, where our cat quickly ran down. We immediately went down the stairs and retreived her. Hours later we were ready to sit down and eat the pies only to find they all had cat paw prints on them.

Omg labmom that is so funny! Thank for sharing the chicken story, I have a very currious golden doodle who is constantly trying to get my cakes! He got the top tier of my sons birthday cake about an hour before the party. I was soooo upset,I have since learned my lesson! dog in the crate while baking and cakes locked in the back room when finished! Thanks for sharing I needed a good laugh today!

Ohh no!! haha! I know not that funny it's unfortunate that it had to happen! I walked away from my kitchen for a few minutes I walk back to find my cat licking the buttercream out the bowl! I was like gaahh!! I was pleased thought that the buttercream was made for practicing piping and wasn't actually going to be ingested!
