How do I make fondant letters without cutouts?

I know this is very basic probably for most of you talented folks out there, however I need to write on a cake and am looking to use bold fondant letters. I don't have cutouts and am looking for some advice to make this an easy task. Does anyone have advice? Thanks for the help always!

You could roll your fondant into a thin snake, snip it to size and free-form sausage-like letters.

Check out my most recent baby shower cake. For the "Baby" on there, I used this technique:
Print out on Word what you want. I used Times New Roman font in Bold at like 300pt. (I look at the ruler on the left and use that as a guide as to how high I want my letters so they will fit on the cake.)
Print it out, cut each individual letter out. Roll out your fondant and let dry a little. (I usually roll it out first, then print out the letters while the fondant dries.) Place each letter on the fondant and trace lightly with a toothpick. I put a little Crisco on the back of each letter to keep it in place while I'm tracing.
Take your exacto and cut each letter out. Let it dry a little more before putting on the cake so the letters don't warp as you pick them up.

The "A" on my scroll cake was made from fondant, it is very "bold".
This was done freehand but usually I go to fonts on my 'puter find the one I like and use it as a template. I have yet to be able to load a pic on the forums but it is on my page. If you are doing them completely fondant (no gum paste) then do them a few days before you need them as they take longer to dry. hth

I use modelin chocolate SUPER easy to make just mix chocolate with corn syrup! let it cool, knead it, roll it out "on parchment" it will NOT stick! and put in the freezer for a few min. it will be perfect to cut out anything! you can just lightly trace than go back with your knife and cut. Best i've ever found for perfectly cut letters and designs. I cut out the horse on the pegasus cake like that should be in my cakes.

Thank you all for your tips they were ALL helpful! I had done printed on word and traced for my first cake but letting the fondant harden a little before cutting is a great help! Thank you again for all of your input...i LOVE the chocolate idea too that sounds delish!
