I am totally new to this site and I am planning to make my own cake for my son's 5th birthday. It's a Monster Jam Monster Truck themed party and my idea for the cake so far is for the bottom half to look like dirt for the track and I was thinking of using brown sugar. I watch Cake Boss and I've seen Buddy use it a few times, but wondered what it would taste like on a cake. My son wants a yellow cake...like from pillsbury or whatever...and then using regular frosting and then putting brown sugar on it to get the dirt effect. Has anyone done this before...I wanna know what brown sugar would taste like on a cake. If it's not good, does anyone know how to dye frosting brown..like a dirt color..without having to use chocolate frosting?Thank you!

For dirt, I use crushed Graham Crackers

i personally think its WAY TOO MUCH SUGAR, i use graham crackers they are stills weet and taste much better than a mouth full of sugar. I say it to my husband every time we see on his show he uses brown sugar icon_smile.gif I have also used shreaded chocolate i just use my cheese shreader and take pieces of dark chocolate it will make it lighter (dirt color), i have used rice crispies and airbrushed them.... lots of options that taste better

You're right to worry about how it would taste....a mouthful of brown sugar is a bit too much for me! For sand on my beach themed cupcakes I use equal parts of brown sugar and graham cracker crumbs. It looks quite realistic, but I avoid using big piles of it. I tint the icing a tan color, then sprinkle on the mixture.

brown sugar tends to look more like sand than dirt. You can use crushed chocolate wafer cookies or chocolate graham crackers, or try a combination of chocolate cookies or grahams and regular grahams or shortbread cookies until you get the color you want.
