Hi all,

I have been asked to make a cake, the design is a Chow Chow on a lazy Susan, I have been wrecking my brains on how I am going to do this and where am i going to start.

If anyone has any ideas then please let me know.

ok I understand that the Chow Chow is sopose to be part of the cake but where i'm confused is .... The ChowChow cake need to be on a Real Lazy Susan? Or is the Lazy Susan sopose to be made possibly out of cake to?

I would make a large sofa chair and then do a small chow chow on it...

ok I did a little thinking on both of my questions and looking at the Border Collie you have made I figure I could answer both of my questions.

First if the cake is to be like the Border Collie Head [Awesome Job by the way] you made: I would do a image search or google Chow Chows and study the images to get a better look at different types, colors and looks for Chow Chows.
Also If just doing the Head of The Chow Chow as a extra treat for the person receiving the cake I would make some doggy bone shape cookies and lay them around the base of the cake. You can frost the top of the cookies and then write some thing on top of them. or just write on top of them.
I make homemade doogy treats and I got my Doggy Bone cookie cutter at JoAnns for like a $1 or less.


Now if the Lazy Susan is to be part of the cake. hmmmmm? Well maybe rice treats to make the Lazy Susan making the lip of it to come up with the treats. Then cover it with fondant.
If it needs to be made out of cake and not treats. I would make 2 large round cakes. 1 for the base and then cut the middle out of the 2nd one [like a hula-hoop]. Lay that one on top. Cover with frosting or fondant and Wala` you have a Lazy Susan made out of Cake. :0)

Many thanks for your thoughts, yes the whole thing was requested to be made out of cake (some people have some strange ideas),

I too came up with roughly the same way to make the lazy susan, just not sure if it would work, if i dowel it to give it some support that might give it more support, I was also unsure whether to make the Chow Chow out of cake or just model it out of fondant, either sitting or lying down.

I love the idea of the dog bones and thought I would put them around the edge of the lazy susan.

It's a good thing there were others who offered ideas for you because my southern upbringing took me straight to 'relish on a plate that turns'!

What is a lazy susan? I immediately thought of green tomato relish on a turntable and couldn't figure out why anyone would want a cake like that! LOL Obviously, it is a term for something I'm unfamiliar with - I thought it was a turntable...

Yep your right a Lazy Susan is a turn table, very similar to the ones we all use to decorate our cakes on. Some are flat and just turn on the table often used in chinese resturants, I am hoping to do a raised one like a stand.

I have now made 3 cakes one for the base, 1 for the upright stand and 1 for the top, the chow is going to be made out of fondant.

Fingers crossed it all goes right.

OK. I "think" I understand... So they want a Chow Chow dog on a cake that looks like a Lazy Susan Pedestal stand? If Im understanding correctly, I have an idea for you.

If you use this hardware and attach it to a cakeboard then attach another cakeboard on top holding the cake, would that work to make a turntable. The pedestal base could be carved out of stacked smaller cakes to resemble the stand. (If you look at my photos, there are two tiers on the masquerade cake I carved like this.)

I hope I am understanding you correctly and am offering some kind of help. If not, you're probably thinking "OK, soonergirl, you have NO IDEA!!" lol

The brown chow is a bit dark ( however they did request a dark brown dog and not the more common tan coloured one).

Not really the best by my standards but good for a first attempt.

Dollydoo2000 It is so cute. It makes you want to scoop up the little chow chow and cuddle :0)
He is on the dark side. They must have a Dark Brown Chow Chow.
