Powder Color in Chocolate

I need help with this one. My daughter is making a 3D model of the solar system using cake, rice krispies and chocolate. No Styrofoam models for her, she wants to be like mommy and make them out of cake ;o)

The planets will be rice krispies covered in Wilton white candy melts. She wants to paint the planets. Can we use regular powder food coloring or petal dust? Or does it need to be a special kind because of the "chocolate"?

Of course, she tells me all of this today and it is due tomorrow...oh the joys of being an active parent ;o)

I'm sorry I don't know the answer to this question, but I LOVE your daughter's idea! I always wanted to make my models of *whatever* out of food in school! Best of luck!!!

It's better if you dilute the colours in cocoa butter and paint on the chocolate with that.

But which kind of colors, LisaPeps? The gel/paste ones, powdered ones or the oil-based ones that are for coloring candy? I'd love to know I could use gel or paste colors with my chocolate in one way or another.

I wouldn't use gel colours with anything chocolatey... Unless you have americolor flocoat (google it). If it were me I would use petal colours/ dust/powder colours mixed in with melted cocoa butter. I've never used the oil colours so can't help you with that, though I'd assume they'd be okay in the cocoa butter too.
