Hi everyone, I'm new here and in the cake decorating business as well. I'm wondering how old were you when you first started decorating cakes. I'm 30 now and I'm just starting but I feel kind of old and there's a lot ahead of me. I would really like to know this about you guys. Thanx

I started when I was 21, Im 24 now... who cares what your age is if you found something you enjoy doing!

I didn't take classes but started cake decorating for a grocery store at 18. I didn't even know what I was doing It was one of those things where they threw me into the position when another decorator left abruptly and I had to just jump in and figure it out. That was seventeen years ago, and I'm still cake obsessed!

I had no interest in cake decorating until my son had his first birthday and I made his cake. I would have been 28. I've been caking a little over two years now.

It's funny now, but when I got married I couldn't have cared less what my wedding cake looked like. I got my mum to make it - she's a pretty good old-school (ie lots of royal icing piping, realistic sugar flowers) cake decorator. I told her to make whatever, perhaps something casual & chocolate covered...but no 'daggy, old-fashioned' (LOL, this is how I thought at the time!) sugar flowers & white fondant. And that was only five years ago, LOL.

I started for my sons first birthday as well, that was a little over a year ago, was 19.

I'm 34, and started decorating seriously in May last year after making my youngest sons first birthday cake. My eldest son will soon be 8, and I've always made a homemade cake for my kids birthdays, which started with his first birthday, in May 2004. So I've always baked cakes, but only been into serious cake decorating and novelty cakes since last year.
I have a dream of being a successful home decorator business when my youngest goes to school. I've got the business name sussed already, Sweet Mama D's! I just have to bide my time and learn and practice as much as I can in the couple of years until my wee guy starts school.

I was 47 when my daughter got engaged and reminded me of a promise I made her when she was 8.....that I would make her wedding cake. I started making practice cakes and taking them to work so people could eat them (I don't eat cake). People at work started asking me to make them cakes for different events in their lives and I've made cakes for different events at work. I had no formal training (except for watching over my grandmothers' shoulders as a young child).

I made my daughter's 6 tier wedding cake in June of 2009 and have been getting requests for cakes ever since. I spend a lot of time making practice cakes, cupcakes and coming up with new designs. I am basically self-taught with help from videos and tutorials from this site.

I was 17 when I took my first Wilton class...I'll be 29 on Saturday!

I made my first wedding cake when I was 18. It was a three tier cake in a buttercream finish with tiny wine glasses separating the tiers and it was for my brother's wedding. That was 36 years ago back in 1975. Hardly had a clue what I was doing but it turned out great.

After that first wedding cake, I only did it for very close family and friends. I didn't start my caking business until six years ago when I retired from the work force and could devote the time to it.

36 years and I'm still learning new things all the time. I'm thinking it's time to stop when I'm no longer interested in learning!

I'm 44 (45 in two more weeks), and I've been baking cakes since I was 11. I took cake decorating classes when I was 27. I stopped baking and decorating 3 months ago. Now I'm teaching others.

i was 13 when i baked and decorated my first cake by myself for my birthday. i didnt think about it again until i was 22 and made a minitruck cake for my boyfriend (now husband) and havent put down the icing bag since. lol

I turned 56 on Tuesday (Feb 22) and January 10th marked one year of caking for me. The most I'd ever done prior to last January were scratch snack cakes that I'd up with nothing more than a bit of whipped cream or cream cheese icing and maybe a bit of chocolate sauce for some excitement now and then. Then I got hooked on FN challenge, Ace of Cakes and Cake Boss. I kept seeing the gum paste flowers and thinking 'I could do that'. So, one day I searched on the internet and found a pastillage recipe that needed only ingredients that I had in the house at the time. From there I moved on to modelling chocolate and I haven't looked back.

I've loved baking and decorating cakes since I was 9 or 10 and I'm 25 now. I'm a serious newbie and have only just begun to use fondant but I love it!

Thank heaven for Cakeyouverymuch! I was beginning to feel ancient! Only started decorating cakes in August 2009 when my niece suggested I tried doing it due to the fact that the latest celebration cake bought for my nephew tasted like mouldy mud and my cakes were the yummiest she'd ever tasted! It was supposed to be chocolate cake and even the rug rats wouldn't eat it! Haven't had classes - self taught and devour every tutorial I can find on the internet. I'm 52 by the way.

I am 59, and have been baking cakes for years, but took some classes about 4 yrs ago, and got addicted to it. Now my dd is helping me with a bakery. She is great at carved and painted cakes while as she says I do the foofy, frilly stuff.LOL She will be 40 in a few weeks. I got her started on them with the Roach bug cake in our pictures last year.

lol @ ChilliPepper. Now you've gone and made me feel ancient. Seriously though, I'm wishing I'd started this earlier, and I'm hoping it won't take me too long to get back into to it after I have by-pass surgery on 21 March. After I'm all recovered I plan to put some serious effort into getting this turned into a real business.

I was like 17 when I made my first 'big' cake. It was a single layer baby sweater shower cake for my sister's first kid. That was 13 years ago. I am pretty much always made my nephews and niece birthday cakes. I started taking orders about four years ago when I was laid off.

I'm 46 and baked & decorated my very first cake 2 years ago for my parents wedding anniversary. Whilst the cake tasted ok, the finish was awful - the top was completely bumpy. Didn't have a clue as to what I was doing. Followed a you tube tutorial on making flowers and that's how I got addicted. I'm now trying to turn this into a successful home business.

I think I was around 12 when I decorated my first cake. It was a Holly Hobby cake that I made for my neices birthday. Wow that was 28 years ago. But I didn't really get into decorating full time until last year. I am now 40 and have no plans of putting my piping bag down for many years, if I ever put it down. Shoot, they may have to put a piping bag in my cold stiff hands. LOL

I was 14 when I took my first class, but have only done it as a hobby until now. I'm soon to be 43 years old and my business officially opens on March 1st. LOL! Hey, better late than never, right?

I'm 43 yrs. old and started taking Wilton classes one year ago at Michaels. And, I made over 50 cakes since last February. My daughter turned "21" a few years ago and I thought I paid an incredible amount for a cake that wasn't all that, so I finally decided to start making my own for family and friends. I'm loving every minute of it! I don't sell, but one day in the future I hope to.
