Ok here is the idea I am working on. I need a hunting sceen cake for my father in law. The plan is to make a half sheet cake, on one side of the cake I want to make tall grass with a little bunker thingy and a hunter holding a gun sitting just inside the bunker. And I want to add tall grass around to make it look more realistic. Then the other side will have a stream and some deer I plan to make from fondant/gumpaste mixture.
I don't know what I can use to make the grass look like real grass. But it has to be brown grass because it's not green grass during hunting season, right? I am open to suggestions for using anything food related, not just gumpaste/fondant. I love using something you would never think of to get just the right look for a cake.
While I am asking....how about making a tree? I know I can make Evergreen trees with ice cream cones and icing or fondant. But what about other trees, with no leaves? TIA!
Use melted chocolate to pipe some bare trees. I have some trees on my snowboarder cake that are piped with chocolate. They were piped on a skewer, on side at a time, flpped over and piped on the other side.
You could make some royal icing grass, or use candy melts. Pipe it flat on parchment paper then when firm, turn it over and pipe more grass on the back (maybe with toothpicks or spaghetti sticking out the bottom to stick it in the cake).
Hope that helps
One possible idea for a tree is to take several pieces of thin wire and twist it together to look like a tree, and then dip it in brown royal icing... Did this for my cake titled 'October Birthday Cake' and it worked out pretty well.
Thank you for the suggestions. I guess I will just need to try a few things until I find what I like.
