Bottom line is don't undersell yourself. You may be a bakery owner, or just a hobby baker, either way YOUR time is valuable! I have two little ones and a wonderful husband that I try and savor my time with. Every hour I spend making someone else's cake takes time away from my household and family! Time I'll never get back, and time that I want to be compensated for! That being said, YOU are also an artist! YOUR medium is cake! And I believe our time is worth more than slightly over minimum wage! When you think of it this way, it makes it much easier to charge more for your cakes!
AHi everyone ! Love everyone's talent on here wow! I'm just wondering what you guys would charge for this lorax cake I charged $60 but don't know if its underpriced or about right ? What do you think ?
Way underpriced. Do a search for pricing and there are dozens of threads on how to set your pricing. It is really cute.
AYou can't charge anything for the Lorax cake unless you had permission from the copyright owner.
You didn't give sizes of the cakes but at $60 I'm guessing you made about $2 an hour after covering your expenses and overhead, if that. Would you work for anyone else for $2 an hour?

You aren't supposed to do figures that are another under copywrite, but if I did this cake, it would be about $160.
I thought I would throw this one out there. It is a 10 inch round vanilla with 8 inch round chocolate covered in buttercream with buttercream filling and fondant/gum paste accents. The fancy flavors and fillings are just not popular around here. I am not at the level of most of you but I think they are well done and I get rave reviews on the taste. I operate under the Indiana Home Based Vendor law and have checked with my local health department and been advised that I can sell from home, it does not have to be a roadside stand which may be a unique interpretation. I do have insurance etc.
I believe that this thread is for you to tell us what you charged for the cake when you sold it, not for us to tell you what it should have cost.
Oh it sits on a thin styrofoam support. Secured with melted chocolate and thick BBQ skewars
The box is 5' high by 4.5" wide carrot cake torted to 5 layers with cream cheese filling covered in fondant. The outside is chocolate ganache. The wheels are gumpaste The side lettering is chocolate molds. The can is chocolate cake and cake pop materials to build it up,covered in fondant. The original was a 6" X 3" built up into a truck cab. I charged $220

Beautiful cake! Please could you kindly tell me what exact chocolate mould you used for the chocolate shoe? Thank you
AHi here is the web site I bought it from, the moulds in here are fab. You will need mould 1 & 2 for a 3d shoe http://www.homechocolatefactory.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Category_Code=ECM
:D
I use this for all my shoes as I find it hard to transport sugar shoes without them breaking, I have been covering mine in fondant but I can now paint them as I have came across edible chocolate paint.
Hope this helps
Thanks

Thanks a lot for your help!
Oh my goodness! Thats crazy, your going to have to put down your foot at some point. Cakes are fun and all, but you cant continue to loose out because you have a greedy friend! Stand up for your cakes :)
I charged $250 for this cake. Essentially it was a wedding gift because that ended up basically being the price of the products I had to buy. What would you normally charge for a cake like this?

I just quoted $550 for this (Or trade for built in cabinets) It uses 1 1/2 Wasc (3 boxes) recipes. 2 RKT batches, 3 batches of modeling chcoclate...also requiresflanging PVc to a wooden board. If we do it I will bill him normally for the cake and he will invoice me normal price for his work. I hope I get it. Ifso I will letyou all know what it actually cost in hours and ingredients. The original baker put up instructions and encourages people to duplicate it and post their results on her FBpage. I have not see anyone try yet...
Can you post the link to the baker who put up the directions for this cake? THANKS
A

The December/January issue of Brides Magazine has pictures of several wedding cakes along with the prices. They are nice cakes, but nothing most of the posters on this thread couldn't do. The lowest priced one was $9 a slice.
Pricing is the hardest part of our jobs. I know I still undercharge at times. With the price of ingredients, I have learned to be more conscientious of my pricing. This is a cake I made last weekend. My customer actually drove about 3 hours from her home to pick it up. The inside of the cake is yellow and purple zebra stripes. The cake is covered in buttercream, and the tiger eye on top is a buttercream transfer. The stripes on the bottom layer and the letters are made from hand made fondant. Bottom tier is 8", top is 6". I live in Central Louisiana. I charged $150 for this, because it was not that time consuming, and the detail work was really easy. I've learned that when someone "balks" at my prices, I remind them that I do "specialty" cakes, made to order and use fresh ingredients. If they want a cardboard tasting cake that has been frozen and pre made icing, they should go to their local grocery store or Wal-Mart!
Such a beautiful cake! Working with black is difficult, but you pulled it off! If I was doing this cake in my area, I would charge around $650, plus delivery. And I wouldn't cry about it if they found someone to do it cheaper!
hi, i am attempting to locate a tutorial to help me make a cake with a n
nurse' theme. I would like to put a nurse hat and other things a nurse uses on the cake. Is there anyone out there what can assist in locating such a tutorial. thanks
Hi, can you give me the instructions also for the rose cake? I want to make this. it is beautiful.
Please, please, please. can u please give me the instructions? Thanks
AHi, Your cakes are great! I love in rural NY, not a wealthy area by any means, and 10 years ago I paid $80 for a Barbie sheet cake, simple, nothing fancy. You are seriously undercharging for your talent!
Thank you. It's definitely something I'm doing research on. I'm working on a set per serving price list.
