I have a dumb question, and I could use some help.
You see, I am no artist...at all!! Can't draw a straight line. However, I have a chance tomorrow to take some painting classes. This artist is going to show how to mix colors along with how to paint.
Now, I am thinking.... Hmmm.... here's my chance to learn a little something so maybe I could start doing some free hand painting on my fondant. So I signed up.
Now, I am being told that it wasn't the same thing at all?? Of course by someone who has never worked with fondant, but has had a painting class.
Is it the same thing?? I was wondering if any of you have done what I am thinking of??
Thanks alot!!
Ha my partner hand paints on fondant/gumpaste all the time check out this beauty [/img]http://cakecentral.com/gallery/1904287 That label and the crowns on the band are painted with food coloring and a touch of vodka. She is an artist that works in many mediums and she has no trouble at all. Just experiment a bit until you get the feel for it. Don't let anyone tell you what you can and can't do in cake. lol find that out for yourself.
Hi Rhonda I was wondering the same thing but with the Air Brush. I had air brush painting classes at University so I wonder if it will be the same thing doing it for a cake.
As for your question, I am not sure if it would be the same thing. I took painting classes as well but I have never tried painting on Fondat, It will probably not be the same as the paint, and surface that you are working on is not the same. Sometimes is just about "Precision", they way you work with your hands, because the technique you can mastered with practice. Give it a try you might be surprised with the results!
You will have to do some adjusting, but I bet you can take what you learn in that class and translate it to cakes. I've seen people paint on cakes using buttercreams thinned down, so I can't see how it would be too much different.
You will definitely get some good knowledge from the class. Any artistic class where you can learn new skillls can come into cake decorating in some shape or form. I used to make 3d mock-ups of printed materials for an advertising agency....you would be amazed and how often i use those same skills when constructing a ed cake or cake support!
Some people like to paint on cakes where you mix gel colors with a form of alcohol... that's more like painting with water colors.
But dont worry go to the class and enjoy it!
Go and have fun. I've used gel colours and vodka to make "paint" and painted on fondant. Just because it's not canvas, doesn't mean it can't be done. And I've painted with my airbrush colours when my airbrush decided it wasn't going to work that day. I've seen some amazing cakes where people have used a brush and colours and painted as well as created incredible pictures using an airbrush on fondant and buttercream.

Don't ever let someone tell you that you can't do something (as long as it isn't illegal or putting harm to anyone)! I say take the class and learn some painting techniques. Maybe they will transfer over to cake and maybe not. Maybe you will learn that you have a real talent for painting. You never know unless you TRY!
Thank you all so much!! I really felt kinda " dumb " for even asking....I really enjoyed reading your responses, and it made the difference...
I am absolutely going to the classes tomorrow!!! I am hoping to learn some really good techniques that I can incorporate into my cake decorating!!
I haven't decorated any cakes in quite a while, but hope to get back into it in a year or so... hopefully it will be sooner rather than later..
Thank you so much for your responses!!! and " TexasSugar" everything was just beautiful that you showed me!!!
