I delivered a 3-tier wedding cake last weekend, took pictures after setting it up, had the MOTB sign off on a safe delivery, that the cake was placed in the designated location, etc. I hadn't even gotten 10 minutes away when I got a call from the MOTB screaming that my cake just...fell over and landed on the floor and that I MUST get another cake to them before the reception started in 4 hours! I turned around and went back to the reception hall, and sure enough, my cake was lying on the floor. But I noticed that the cake wasn't anywhere near where I left it. icon_confused.gif

I told MOTB that someone had moved the cake and I wasn't responsible for it falling. She became furious, called me a liar, said the cake was exactly where I left it, and demanded another cake AND a full refund! So, I pulled out my handy-dandy camera and showed her the pictures I took after setting up the cake...which included the background of the room thumbs_up.gif and I pointed out to her that the cake was now clear across the room from where I left it! icon_biggrin.gif

So word from the wise...ALWAYS take a picture after setting up your cakes AND be sure they include the room's background so you have proof of where you left the cake!!

She was mortified! She started crying and saying she was under so much stress. She apologized and begged me to do another cake. I told her the best I could do at that point was give her the number to WalMart. I really felt bad for her. Even though she yelled at me, I just hate to see someone's wedding day messed up.

Yeah, i feel bad for you both... I understand her stressing out... but she shouldn't have snapped at you like that without having the whole story. And i totally feel for you in all your hard work! *comfort* you handled it well though, congrats!

Too funny. What did she think? You could just wave your magic spatula and poof there would be another 3 tiered fully decorated cake?

Please post a picture of the cake pre fall

I always photograph the cake from all 4 sides before I leave and I also make the bride aware that I do that at the consultation.

In this day and age, anyone who doesn't get photographic evidence before they leave is just asking for trouble!

How do these people sleep at night? It boggles my mind how easily people do things like this. Did it not occur to her that refunding the whole amount of a wedding cake and/or making a whole new cake is tantamount to taking what could amount to a weeks salary out of your pocket...out of the mouth's of your family. This is how cheaply she sells her soul? Just so she doesn't have to suffer the consequences of what happened to HER, she so easily tries to transfer these enormous consequences to another innocent human being, YOU. Disgusting.

Well said. A lot of people's default answer is that it is someone else's fault. Thank goodness not everyone in the world is like this!

and I bet if you used that "magic spatula" and whipped something up in the 4 hours that remained (providing no other work was scheduled), the witch MOTB would complain it was wrong.

Can't take a good honest person, and turn them into a liar because of "stress". UGH! A full refund and a new cake for errors SHE made!

The nerve....

I forgot to say.... thumbs_up.gifthumbs_up.gifthumbs_up.gifthumbs_up.gifthumbs_up.gif to the OP for documenting everything. A potential BAD situation, liability, and financial losses for the baker avoided!

Lessons for all to share and learn by!

And lots of wishes for the MOTB for bad karma for her attempt to defraud you.... icon_evil.gificon_twisted.gificon_mad.gificon_evil.gificon_twisted.gificon_mad.gif

REALLY?? She went from insisting it was not moved, demanding another cake in 4 hrs AND full refund....to crying saying she was under stress and asking for help?

I'm sorry, call me cold hearted, but I would have looked her right in the eye and told her that, she called me a liar and if it weren't for the camera she would have kept up the lie. Then before turning my back and walking out I would have said, "You signed of on a satisfactory delivery, you moved the cake, you figure it out. Not my problem."

I've been in emotionally and psychologically abusive relationships and am no one's doormat. So I don't take abuse from anyone. Wedding, tears, or what ever. Nothing gives anyone the right to be abusive.

Another example of the entitlement mentality.

ps, I take my digital camera everywhere and have a spare battery.

AMEN! I agree whole-heartedly with you. I've been there, done that, and got the scars to prove it.

I can't believe that she was bold enough to have called you, as if it was YOUR fault! Since, I am betting that she is the one who moved it. Just my opinion.
But honestly, when I read this, all I could think of was the poor bride!! How awful this happened to both of you!
Thank God for the camera!! And yes, a lesson learned for me!
I love this site, I am always learning some valuable lesson!

Bravo for the pictures!

And bravo for being paid in full before delivery so that the customer cannot "hostage" the payment.

Where's the applause emoticon when you need one!

Yes! Great stuff icon_smile.gif

I always have at least my iPhone with me to take pics of the cake as I leave it...and of course a signed delivery receipt. My mama didn't raise no ijits.

BUT, having said that, I just want to caution new decorators to not only take photos and get a sign-off on the cake, but please make sure you have a sturdy, safe place to put the wedding cake at the venue. Check it out BEFORE you put the cake on the table - yes, look until that white tablecoth!! Part of your fee is for the set-up, and it behooves you to do this well.

BTW...This comment is not directed at anyone...just a helpful hint!
