How to make a checkerboard pattern with fondant

Thread Starter
I am hoping to make a twilight cake for my birthday next month, I drew my design but I am not sure about how to approach making it come to life. I am planning on doing a tri-level stacked cake and the middle cake is supposed to be checkerboard patterned. I have tried to do a "guilt" out of fondant before and it just didn't come out the way I wanted it to. Any tips, tricks or advice is greatly appreciated!

I did a checkered pattern on my Cars cake. I just used thE square cutter from Wilton. It would have been better if I had the atteco cutters because there are more size options. I wrote up the details here

The instructions for the squares are about midway down.

I did checkerboard on my Cars cake also. (You can click on my photos to see it.) I just covered the cake with white fondant then cut out black squares for it. It didn't meet up property on the cake, but I put the tower of tires to try to cover it up. hahaha!
